oh, and another thing.......... when it's hot (a rareity in the UK) they will sit in the FULL sun with one wing spread to try and dissipate the heat, panting like dogs tish! As well as standing like drown rats in the rain instead of taking shelter hmmmm.............
on balance.................... they are stupid. The number of times we've seen them struggle to find a way to get out of the run - when the gate open............. ! And they've only been in the run 18 months!
Just the other day our girl who has hatched 2 chicks was becoming really...
I agree.......remove the babies from the adults. I read somewhere young chicks need to be separated from the rest until they are 8 week old............our couple of week old chicks got into the next door run last week where the adults were and the adults were terrified - cowering in the corner...
Plain spaghetti IS a hoot! I threw some to our chix recently and one girl got it entangled around her foot. Amusing to see her running backwards in a circle trying to bite it off whilst the others just helped themselves whilst she struggled tee-hee!
We have 2 x week old chicks and it's...
Yes thanks for that. Just come in from checking on mum and I placed corn in front of her and she went mad for it!! She's still sat on eggs and looking after baby but was happy to feed as well. Have placed water in too but put stones in just in case baby falls in.
Our girl has hatched her first baby this morning (what a cutie!) with two more eggs still to hatch. Mum is sat on the eggs and shielding her baby at the same time aaw!
Mum not eaten or drunk since yesterday - should I take her out to feed? And will baby be warm enough without her for a few...
I agree with the others. It is a big concern when they don't eat and drink and you have to physically remove them every day.
Our girl Maggie is on her 2nd BIG broody moment. When she first went broody we thought we'd lost her - then found her hiding underneath the overturned wheelbarrow...
Yeah see what you mean...... like I said I think crows will be their only threat but I HATE them! Thank goodness we don't have many predators but these ugly black nuisances just won't give up, if you threw a piece of bread on the lawn there would be 10 crows in the garden seconds later aaaargh!
Wish I could! Not sure if it's legal to shoot them here (still trying to find out) but believe me I'd stay up from dawn till dusk with a gun if I could.
Just worries me what to do when we at work...............? Place netting across top of fencing to stop them dropping into run??
On one hand, we don't have problems with snakes, coyotes, raccoons and the like but living in our rural green-belt village in the north yorkshire dales we are plagued by CROWS!
They drive me insane! They eat the chicken's food in the run (whilst the ladies look idly on aarghh!) and have now...
Sorry to sound pretty vague here, but we thought our newly bought chickens would NEVER lay so we rang our supplier and he mentioned something about the vent that will tell you if they are about to lay.
Like I said, sorry it's vague but worry not they WILL lay when the time is right!!
Hi rainbowgardens - these soft-shelled eggs are perfectly normal and occur when they start laying for the first time. They will need plenty of oyster-shell grit in their diet to help these shells firm up.
Some people dry out used eggs shells in the oven they grind them down and give them back...
Hi there - we have had the same problem with our girl for going on 4 weeks. Stays in the coup, we lift her out to eat - she just sits on ground then after food is FRANTIC to sit back on an empty nest.
I entered the live chat here at this (fab) forum and the two main responses were: she will...
According to the books I've read, chicks have poor eyesight and as soon as the light falls they wander on in.
We leave the coop open in the evening and as soon as the sun starts to fall (and perhaps like others say, it gets chilly) our little chicky-chicks retire to bed then we pop out later...
Our two year old "Magpies" are broody and have been for going on 3 weeks. Like most other posts here, they will sit all day on nothing and will not come out unless we remove them from the nest.
A few days ago I found a "new" egg broken on coop floor i.e. the shell was soft and pliable like...
Hello! Yes thanx for your help in getting started.
Yes I do think perhaps they ARE broody but never thought they get broody without eggs to sit on...................and they are always together................. just seems strange they are broody at the same time too............oh...
Okay thanks for that - I will try and keep them away from the nest, like I did today, but they still hanker after going back. What puzzles me is they are just sitting on an empty nest, all day. I could understand it if they were sat on eggs hmmmm.............
