Looking so much better! I don't usually get the luxury of close observation in an uncrowded incubator, after a hatch. Have to let the students observe after all!
Looking better already! Everybody is back in the incubator for moral support. I'll check every 30 minutes and then put everyone else back in the brooder when I go to bed.
12 hatched! Including one that I had snuggled in my bra on the drive home. :) 2 other eggs in the incubator bit I don't think they'll hatch. However this lucky last baby seems to have curled feet. It just hatched moments ago, so I'll let it dry off and get its legs first, then check in...
Well I thought I'd be moving them all to the brooder box this morning! Then one hatched just as I arrived. A second one hatched about an hour later. AND we have at least one more pipped! So I will wait as long as I can today at school before taking them out and bringing them on the quick trip...
Hi All! Last year's class had a great time with the Chick Project, getting 13 of 19 of DMRippy's awesome eggs to hatch! All chicks found good homes - even my scissor beak. This year, however, I would move more quickly to cull a scissor beak, should I get another one.
Last year I had to do the...
I have a beautiful Lavendar Marans, 12 weeks old, with a cross-beak that needs a permanent home. The chicken is able to eat a mash diet, and has been growing well. I'm located in Miami FL and will bring the chicken to you as long as you are somewhere within a 12-hour driving radius. The chick is...
One of my lavendar marans started showing a scissor beak last week, at 3 weeks. This week it looks worse. So my questions are:
Remedies?
Or is this a chick that needs to be culled? I don't have enough experience to tell whether this is a livable cross or not. The chick can drink well, but I'm...
I noticed that my little chick still wasn't showing any improvement at all, even after most of the day in the hobbler. So I read some more and saw poultry pedia podiatry's info about tendinitis.I could feel the tendon snap into place on both legs. It took a few tries, but I was able to get...
Further investigation made it seem like tendonitis, so the legs are now "taped" with a bandaid at each joint, as well as the hobbler to correct the stance. Poor little chick has what seems awfully close to bone exposure on on leg, I think from being splayed at hatch and then some brooder buddies...
My 14th fluffball has spraddle leg, I think. I can't tell if there's also a curled toe issue. I have the bandaid hobbler on, and the legs were less splayed when I changed the hobble about an hour ago (hobbled since 8:30 AM this morning). But I'd really like some feedback - can anyone confirm...
Thanks so much for all of the advice! I cracked open the incubator, brought the egg below the vent, and was able to drip water on to the zip. I'm happy to say that #13 is hatched and flopping around the incubator!
1 that I can see has pipped and 13 that I can't see any pip. :) So hopefully we'll still see some number between 1 and 13 hatch! How many babies did you get overnight?
