    Thank you all for your comments, we have done everything we can for now - except wrap the entire coop in hardware cloth. The remaining chick is in a dog crate inside of Ft Knox, the baby monitor is out beside the coop and the gun is beside the bed - wish us luck!

    How could a coon or possum get through a 1 in. crack - which is about 4 1/2 ft off the ground? It had to come in through the roof, but still there is about a 3 in. overhang covering the 1 in. crack.

    Waiting is so hard - I have a golden comet that just started laying at 26 wks and an 18 wk old mixed BR that just started too. I don't know what the determining factors are - I think it's just whenever they are ready.

    Looks like a hen to me - without the age though I can't say for sure. It has no pin feathers on the saddle area - I'm just now learning all this - I have 3 hens that turned out to be roos and those pin feathers on the saddle are a dead give away!
