I don't have any trouble with my chickens eating my perennials. But they'll eat all my impatiens they can reach so have to put them in pots up 3 ft high. But they won't touch my petunias, marigolds and geraniums.
I live in Northern Illinois. I have always heard that I should feed them something with higher Protein. Is that true? I currently have 5 girls who free-range. I mix their feed in a bucket with 2 scoops pellets (21% Agrimaster for meat birds) 1 scoop cracked corn and 1 scoop scratch grains. I'm...
I am thinking of buying 4 regular laying chicks and 1 Brahma hen chick. They will free-range. When they are adults, will the Brahma, who will be larger, pick on the smaller chickens or will she be protective?

I've used the pinless peepers on a couple girls and they worked really well. Kept them from 'abusing' the other girls. I kept an eye on the peepers and they never seemed to hurt them. Sure was a relief to the other girls, especially the ones most picked on. Don't be afraid to use them and leave...
I would suggest separating the chickens first for a few weeks. I've done this a couple times. I kept a chicken in a separate pen for about 6 weeks. When I put the problem chicken back in with the others, the dynamics somehow changed and the problem was solved. I've put the peepers on a bully hen...

My work hours have changed so that I don't get home until after dark. So I have 2 choices: leave them in all day or have my daughter shut them up 4-5 days a week. I have been looking at automatic doors and am thoroughly confused. I can't afford the doors suggested. I have a couple questions...
Why do you have an insulated removable wall? How do you gather eggs? How do you gain entry to the run? Very, very interesting. Love it. Wish I was up to doing so much work.
I use these with my ducks year 'round. They have a pond until it freezes over. I attach them to a 5 gallon bucket near the bottom. Then I hang the bucket so it doesn't get turned over. I've been doing this for years.
For the ducklings, I cut a small hole about 3-4" from the bottom of a gallon...
Thank you for your comments. Initially, I wanted her because I wanted dark brown eggs. But when I read the description, I was thrilled to see they would be beautiful also. And your descriptions make me even more excited. I understand about their feathers being iridescent which don't show up in...
