Lost my top girl today. 😢

I understand and agree with your view regarding life. I do not agree with your judgemental tone regarding someone’s choice of how to dispose of a dead animal. Not everyone is capable of digging deep holes and moving heavy rocks. Eating meat that hasn’t been bled is warned against in the Bible so...

Lost my top girl today. 😢

I’m so sorry your sweet girl was killed. I was losing young birds and couldn’t figure out why until one day I came from letting the chickens out and there was a feral cat in my garage. Well I threw at him the first thing I could grab and he ran for the chicken lot. I had seen him around a number...

What to do about the raccoons?

To make a long story short I’ve seen that pitiful face when I know I hit the brain but he just held his hand to his eye and looked like he was going to cry. It took six rounds and I still don’t understand why. I was crying my eyes out and for a couple of days after. But the bottom line is either...

Egg has externally pipped but beak looks stuck!

Hey there Chickynewbie41! With 3 already hatched it sounds like you’re doing great. If the beak looks stuck I would just gently unstick it so it can breathe better. Maybe try to break tiny pieces away around it. I wouldn’t push on it too hard but just enough to see if it’s actually stuck. If it...

Would you feed this to your chicken?

They’re some type of beatle larvae. Also known as chicken candy. Collect all you can find and throw them to the birds. They will devour them! Good source of protein.

    Broodiness Cycle

May I ask, what is your version of broody jail? I usually put mine with a rooster and they give up motherhood real fast.

4 Hens- 1 egg per day...at the end of my rope

The calcium in most feeds is not enough IMHO. Use calcium grit instead of oyster shells. They can’t use all the sizes of oyster shell pieces so when their size is gone they’re out of oyster shell. The rest will just lie there to make you think they aren’t needing it. I hate that stuff. What a waste.

4 Hens- 1 egg per day...at the end of my rope

Well, one more thing. I learned something from Becky of Becky’s Homestead on YouTube. She showed how if the hens are not happy with their roost or nest box it can affect how they lay. She is so funny. She showed how her roost was set up and what she figured out they didn’t like about it. She...

4 Hens- 1 egg per day...at the end of my rope

Good morning. I just ran across this thread and would like to throw in my two cents worth. I believe you have done everything you can do but there’s a catch; some things need to be done differently. I made the mistake of getting a huge bag of oyster shell and throwing generous amounts out and...

    Ice Cream Bars

Thank you Gootziecat for replying. I appreciate the input. I didn't have any mature mixed Roos when their mothers were running about. But I did have splash Isbars! I don't understand genetics enough to know if that could produce her coloring but I do like her very much except for her diva...

    Ice Cream Bars

BTW, their main traits are the pretty eggs, being so thrifty and excellent foragers, and not liking to be confined. They have a third of an acre they share with thirty some other hens but that's just not good enough. They must to check my flower beds daily for whatever might have crawled in...

    Ice Cream Bars

Hello. I just wanted to check in with a couple of questions. First of all, have anyone's ICB's had blue or bluish legs? I believe I accidentally incubated some CL eggs from hens running with my Isbars and they have blue legs. If so then here are my two ICB's. If not then what on earth are these...

BLUE ISBARS - Pictures and discussion

Oh no. I'm so sorry you had mean Welsummers. I got mine from a breeder in SC and right away was amazed at how calm and quiet they were. Especially compared with my Ameraucanas and Marans. As a matter of fact they got bullied because they were so non-aggressive. Just goes to show, temperament can...

BLUE ISBARS - Pictures and discussion

The Isbars take the cake for sure in those areas but Welsummers and Bielefelders come in second and third in my humble opinion. All sweet birds, especially the boys.

    Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons

Hi. Did you get an answer to this question? I think I have the same question. I call it tweed like an old suit. Mine have it on the tips of wings and some have more. I don't think that should be there. I bought the eggs on EBay. The parents were beautiful in the pictures. Never saw this on my...

BLUE ISBARS - Pictures and discussion

Thank you ChicKat. The darkest one actually looks like it could be a black up close but who knows. All but one are from my eggs. The last one to hatch and the only one to hatch from eggs I bought is the yellowish looking one. It almost looks like it could be a white (though I know that's pretty...

BLUE ISBARS - Pictures and discussion

Hello all. I've got babies! And they did it all themselves. Pipped and hatched and started hollering. No nonsense. I needed that. Boy I'm seriously seeing the difference in the quality of eggs!! Let me see if I can get some pictures on here. [/IMG][/IMG]
