I live in Newfoundland, Canada and for the past 7 days I have been 2/2 for egg laying. I have a mobile coop and moved them into my large detached garage with a fairly large window for sunlight.
I just started in the chicken loving business 2 weeks ago with 2, 8 month old Lohman Brown hens. For the first week I did not get a single egg but in the past 7 days I have gotten 14 eggs, they are working like a well oiled machine. Been feeding them 18% laying mash with a bit of scratch, corn...
So I have my answer, after two weeks of chicken ownership, no they are not noisy! I have 2 Lohman Brown hens and they only make some noise when they are excited to see me coming.
My biggest concern is that they wont get enough to eat or drink. I put their water in their house and put extra food in as well, I just would have expected them to hop down and dig into the big feeder.
Yesterday we got ourselves two 7 month old Lohman hens and introduced them to our Garden Ark, which if you are not familiar with can be seen here:

All they wanted to do all day was hang out on the...
COOP IS FINISHED SEE PICS!
I never did a very good job of keeping up to date with updates but I'm happy to report the Garden Ark is complete!
I spent probably about $500 on materials, $200 on tools and still have to get things like feeders and watering equipment. This was quite an...
We went out and bought 16 2 X 2s and will start cutting this weekend. I've been looking for plywood siding but can't find it anywhere, it seems to be a seasonal item unfortunately. If worse comes to worse we will just use regular plywood and give it a nice paint job.
I've also invested in a...
We are taking the plunge into building our first chicken coop, with the ultimate goal of having a house for 2 or 3 hens in the spring. We’ve decided to go with The Garden Ark, we bought the plans on thegardencoop.com for $25 US which currently equates to $32 CAN. I like that it’s not too big...
Hi,
I have a wide open back yard with no fence and backing onto a drop so there are no tress behind us. There is a large detached garage in the back right corner but other that there is no cover. It is quite windy as well so I am really in a quandary about potential coop locations. The back...
I like the look of that one and it has some good reviews. I guess in the winter you just keep shoveling out around it, do the chickens mind walking on snow? At least with this type, you can move it, shovel underneath it and then move it back!

Hi,
I am new here and posting like crazy but I have a large (25 X 30) detached garage. Could put my coop in the garage? I am thinking there are reasons why I wouldn't do that but I am wondering what they would be? Seems like a great shelter during our rough Newfoundland winters. Right now...
I am planning to get into chicken raising but I have no idea how noisy they can be? Our houses are not that close together (200-300ft) but I wouldn't want to bother the neighbors.
Thanks
Hi there,
I am just getting started in backyard chickens, my son is actually the one who is interested in raising some hens for eggs. We are looking to build an inexpensive small coop to start us off. We need something that can handle the wind because it is quite windy where we live. Does...
