    Keeping the run clean?

So it's been just over a year since I started with chickens. Then it quickly spiraled in ducks and geese. My main question is how do I keep the smell down. And the flies. The flies are everywhere? I live in az so the run area is dirt, it gets sun most of the day. I tried straw in the run to...

    Deep litter method (Feathers)

Don't add moisture to the coop, the chickens will do that on their own. I also live in az, I've had chickens about a year and only have cleaned out the coop once because I wanted to add the stuff to my compost pile.

Eating eggs from a newly laying hen.

So 2 of my 8 hens are now laying. The eggs are still very small but the shell, color and shape are all looking good. About how long does everyone here wait until they start to eat the eggs from newly laying hens? Thanks, Matt

    First time with laying hens

They have access to oyster shell in the run. The lip at the end of the nesting box is 3 in high. Thank you for the info. It cleared up a lot of stuff for me.

    Boys or girls?

In April I received 8 chickens from Mypetchicken. I ordered all females, at least I hope. A couple of months ago a friend gave me his 3 Barred Rocks that he was unable to keep at his new house. He got these 3 from TSC in February. In the last three day I have started to wonder about the sex...

I also laid the peel and stick linoleum tiles. So far I like them, the only drawback I can think of right now is how slippery it is with Straw on it. The chicks act like its ice sometimes. Matt
