    What predator did this??

Upon further investigation I found the other chicken's feathers mixed in with this one's. Still no sign of the body and we've been out looking for it all morning. Also, a very large hawk has been sitting in the trees right next to where I found Jimi and flying around the area all morning. Going...

    What predator did this??

They are free ranging. I found Jimi in my garden near the back fence (woods are behind the fence) under a tree. The feathers are for sure all hers because she is black and white and the one that's missing is red. About to take the Ranger out and scan the rest of the property. Hoping she's just...

    What predator did this??

(GRAPHIC PICS IN COMMENTS. BEWARE IF QUEASY OR SENSITIVE) I need some predator identification help. I found one of my chickens (Easter egger) dead and another (EE) is missing. The dead one, Jimi, looks like she has a hole in her belly/side and the intestines were pulled out. Feathers are...

    Sneezing and squeaking chicken

I think I've found a system for the heat. I also got one of those pet cooling mats that is made of gel and stays cool. Hopefully we don't go back to upper nineties! I ordered some VetRX and plan on starting it as soon as it arrives. Even if it doesn't cure, hoping it will help! Thank you!

    Sneezing and squeaking chicken

I was told ACV during the high heat we get isnt good?? So I stopped when the whether started consistently staying above 80 degrees. I've added electrolytes, though. Am I wrong about the ACV??

    Sneezing and squeaking chicken

Very interesting. It has been super humid here lately and we've had strong thunderstorms almost every night. I'll do a deep clean of the coop to remove as much dust as possible in case that's it or contributing. It would make since since she has zero other symptoms and is laying, eating, and...

    Sneezing and squeaking chicken

Me AGAIN! Recap: I lost a chicken on Tuesday to what I assumed was the heat. I also noticed one of my others sneezing a bit, but not frequently. She was also shaking her head a bit and doing the gasping for air thing while shaking her head and/or sneezing. She was also struggling big time in...

    Spot on head/hot/digestive issue?

Hey! I have a BO, and by far my largest one, who is struggling big time with the heat here right now. She is panting like crazy (other ones are too but she actually looks like she's struggling where the others just look hot). She's also doing something odd with her mouth. It's like when they...

    Dead chicken :(

They are only 1 1/2 yrs. so not old. Thanks for the tips. I was so shocked. I just feel bad thinking that I may have been able to help her had I been here today. But to be honest, my old dog will always trump the chickens. I will make sure I don't miss a beat from now on! I'll be checking on...

    Dead chicken :(

Even under the straw bedding? I agree with the logic. Hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks :)

    Dead chicken :(

Went to close up the coop tonight and found a chicken dead on the floor. So sad! I'm assuming she died recently because the smell wasn't horrendous and she wasn't super stiff. I'm thinking heat but I'm worried there may be something underlying I don't know about. I'm in NC and it was very hot...

    Feeding too much?

Yes I do. My son has health issues so diet is extremely important here. I make everything (most days) from scratch and as much organic non gmo and gluten free as possible. It's exhausting but my little man needs it. Since we eat those eggs, I want to make sure they are eating the best too. I'll...

    Feeding too much?

Thanks for the tips. I have a toddler too so our ladies get lots of food from that picky boy! I'll stick with the feed for now and add in some organ meat. Raw, I assume? We are moving to almost 10 acres but hubby doesn't want the poop near the house anymore so I'll have to start clipping wings...

    Missing toenail

I have vetericyn! I'll use that from now on. Thanks for the advice. I was hoping she would be able to stay with them. It's not bleeding so I figured it would be ok. Thanks again!

    Feeding too much?

I'm paying $75/month on feed now. Would it cost more than that you think?

    Missing toenail

One of my girls has a missing toenail. I noticed her limping today (she's my favorite and most friendly girl). She came up to me limping and holding up her foot and crying a noise I couldn't ignore. Her middle toenail is gone. I feel so bad for her. It must hurt like crazy. I put hydrogen...

    Feeding too much?

Sorry I missed these responses!! Thanks for the feedback. I have no intention of withholding feed but didn't know if that was a bad call. So glad this isn't "abnormal". But with the feed I'm feeding it's heavy on the wallet. Time to look into making my own feed!
