A bird haunting...not for faint of heart..

Trouble with Tribbles is the Star Trek episode. Alfred Hitchcock already wrote your life story. Get a cat.

Something is taking my chickens during the day!

Are you still losing chickens after closing the gap? Could there be under-fence access going on? Cats love chicken!

    Bug in pullet poop

Blood of any type in poop is not normal. However, redness caused by eating berries, or other types of food can happen. I suppose if the pullet ate a lizard there could be some blood involved in the "end" I doubt the fly-like bug came with the poop unless the pullet ate it and it didn't digest...

    Diatomaceous Earth

We had a horrible pincher (earwig) but problem this year at the end of winter. I dusted the coop areas after cleaning it, then changed straw, etc. Now the coop is "almost" pest free. Still a couple critters here and there, but for the most part it keeps the moisture down and bugs away...

Beak turned red What's going on?!

Just an update on Lise's red nose. A month later, you can't even tell she had the bruise. Everything is back to normal and she's laying the largest eggs of the flock!

    Help! Flock Integration

With pecking order, once they settle in and start laying eggs they seem to accept their "place" in the order. Whenever I have a treat for the flock, the bottom girl just hangs out away from the frenzy which is no big deal because I toss a chunk of banana or sliced grapes to her direction when...

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Our leghorns just started laying this week at just over 6 months. One has a semi floppy comb, the other has a red upright comb. Not uncommon to have floppy comb that I know of. They are very curious and adventurous. Certainly not afraid of us!

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Almost 2 inches long from "Plucky" our Silver Laced Wyandotte! She's at the bottom of the pecking order of 4 but first to please! So surprised it was shaped so perfectly. Officially 28 weeks old, just over 6 months.

    White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

While our girls (2 leghorns and 2 wyandottes) continue to delay their egg-laying despite our spoiling them, at least we can enjoy them as they play in the yard.

Beak turned red What's going on?!

Thanks so much! This is my first go-round with chickens so any changes other than getting fatter is new stuff to me. Thank you!

Beak turned red What's going on?!

Lise is the top of her pecking flock of only 4 hens. She and the other leghorn have had basic yellow beaks that started to change to this weird red color over the past week. The other hen is just fine. Lise isn't showing any signs of being ill. Eats well and very outgoing. Eats and drinks from...

Beak has changed in shape and color

I noticed this leghorn girl's beak looking "odd" last week and now today, there is clearly something going on with her upper beak. She's in a small flock of 4 and as far as I can tell is the top of her pecking order. She should be laying soon so we changed her to Layena by Purina. Other than...
