Those of you who set on the 10th....How long are you going to wait to stop? I have about 6 eggs of 25 viable eggs not hatched yet, but am a little concered about the all ready hatched chicks!!!
I've heard others say not to touch them, but just checking to see when to call it quits on the last...
Today is day 21...They went in on the evening of the 10th.
There are a few more with holes started, but there hasn't been any progress on those since last night at about 11pm.
First time hatching....Out of 27 eggs, approx 15 are hatched.
Chirping started at 11pm on Thursday. I haven't opened the incubator yet, but wondering when I should. The first chicks hatched sometime around noon yesterday. I'm running to the feed store to get some chick feed, get everything...
I put some eggs from my BO's in on the tenth and last night they started chirping and now their are 7 chicks out so far!!!
I'm using a Little Giant still air model with the egg turner (turner is out now). I haven't really put that much effort into it except making sure that there was water in...
Hello all,
I'm considering slowly raising the volume of meat birds I raise. I'm aware of the 1000 and 20,000 bird limits, but I am a little concerned with the difference between the two. I am a little confused about the "sanitiation" stipulations in the federal law with regard to processing...
Shoshana,
Most hatcheries prefer to ship 25 as a minimum...(for the chicks warmth during shipping). As far as breeding, practically speaking, you aren't going to be able to breed meaties like you can order from a hatchery. Others may have more experience with this, but I have had the best...
After losing our first batch of meaties to a weasel at about three weeks, we did our second batch this weekend....
Laying out our game plan...that's me on the left, my brother in the middle and a good buddy who has butchered thousands of chickens...
I tried a variety of cones for the 40...
I agree....I bought a Pro about a month ago, unfortunately my 22 meat birds were all killed by a weasel or mink a couple of nights ago But I can't wait to use it on my next batch which is coming after Labor Day!!
I recently had my flock of 22 cornish cross wiped out by a family of coons.....a buddy of mine who lives just a bit away has coon hounds. I was thinking of inviting him over for a little fun on a Friday night!
Does anyone have any experience with the sucess of driving coons off with dogs. Of...
There's really nothing for them to return for, they killed all of the meat birds....I made sure that the coop that my BO's are in is locked up good and tight, with the windows closed and the vents just open.
I kept one of the carcasses and left it in the yard....I'll be checking on it...
Well.....went out this morning to put the feed out for my 5.5 week old cornish crosses, and there they were all dead. Necks ripped open, some with missing heads, and most with all the feathers pulled off of the breasts. I'm thinking it has to be raccoons, but ???????
I was moving the pen last...
Sweet Cheeks,
No, it doesn't have any on the bottom or that aprons out...I do have some chicken wire laying around, and may add that tommorrow. I've thought about it, and it is probably a good idea. The tractor is fairly heavy and whatever dug under would have to dig quite a bit to get under...
Sillystunt,
I would have to assume that the ranch you're talking about is on the big Snake River out west...No mountain lions to speak of here in east central Minnesota....
Lalaland,
I posted a pic of my setup on the coop board....If you would like to see more, you're more than welcome...
Just though I would share some pictures of our attempt with chickens!!!
This coop began life as a fish house, and I picked it up for free from a woman who tried to raise chickens for 2 years and never got an egg! She had lots of problems with predators and never had the coop secure enough...
