    Found Chick

Good tip! I rehomed her with a nice young couple who are starting a flock with their kids so she will be getting some roommates shortly. All's well that ends well!

    Found Chick

Of course! She’s safe in my garage with fresh water and chick starter until I either find her rightful home or a new home. Too many hawks, owls, raccoons, possums, and cats in our neighborhood to leave her to fend for herself.

    Found Chick

A neighbor found a chick in the street in front of his house, so naturally he thought it was mine (we live in a city so we are one of the only houses with chickens). It is not, but I wrangled her up nonetheless and have her quarantined in the garage well away from my existing birds. I’ve posted...

Oldest age your hens started to lay?

Thanks all; I’ve got them separated out today to determine the freeloader. Will leg band her and give her a few more weeks to earn her keep.

Oldest age your hens started to lay?

Otherwise healthy as far as I can tell (was/am planning on internal inspection if culled). They’re ok; probably won’t do them again. Got them mainly for the larger egg size and while they do lay regularly and reliably (of the 3 anyway), the eggs aren’t any bigger than standards at the moment...

Oldest age your hens started to lay?

I’m on my third year of coturnix quail keeping and all of my previous coveys started laying by 7 weeks old (last year’s started at 5 weeks), but this year I decided to try jumbos from MyShire. 3 of my 4 12-week-old hens are laying and have been for a few weeks. The last hen, however, has not...

Gasp! Could the feed store have made a mistake?!

Me either! The single comb threw me off the trail for sure.

Gasp! Could the feed store have made a mistake?!

Wanted to revisit this thread with an update: Gert, the feed store mix-up, FINALLY started laying recently (she’ll be a year old next month) and I can confirm she is neither an australorp or a BJG...despite her single comb and lack of beard/muffs, she’s laying a pale green speckled egg (had to...

    Working on the Rainbow

I was planning on adding a white layer to my flock this year, but the California Grey I was supposed to get at the feed store is now my unknown black-feathered pullet...I think she’s a black jersey giant (or possibly Australorp). 26 weeks old and comb and wattles just starting to come in (and...

    The Russian Invasion

I'm curious; what color eggs do yours lay? I have a 26-week old pullet that I am waiting on to start laying. She looks just like your girls (spangled) and she is a beauty. Almost has a bird of prey look to her. Great personality, too, and not afraid of the older hens in the flock (but not a...

Thank you all! These girls are so much fun to have around; the colorful eggs are a huge bonus.

    Working on the Rainbow

Thanks to my black copper Marans laying her first egg a couple days ago (her 2nd egg is in this pic), I’m getting closer to that elusive egg rainbow. Clockwise from the top is my Alchemist Blue hen’s egg, then olive egger, Welsummer, and finally, that BCM stunner. The Welsummer and BCM are new...

The “first egg” never gets old...

I love the light tinted color! I have a Russian Orloff pullet I’m waiting on as well and hoping she lays a lighter egg like that.

The “first egg” never gets old...

In all fairness, my Welsummer has been bullied by my older hens (scalped twice) so that may have delayed her laying...the eggs are worth the wait, though!

The “first egg” never gets old...

...no matter how many “first egg(s)” you find. 5+ years in this hobby and I still squeal with delight when a spring pullet lays her first egg. Like today, when my 24-week-old Welsummer pullet, Ellie, laid her first tiny terra cotta egg (green eggs from my older hens included in pics). *squeal!*

Alchemist Blue Laying Hen - Turlock, CA (Marek’s Positive Home Only)

Free to good home; one Alchemist Blue hen (1.5 years) purchased as day old chick from Alchemist Farms in Sebastopol, CA. I am relocating and new town allows only 6 chickens so I need to downsize my flock. She is a reliable layer of light green eggs. She is a Marek’s carrier so Marek’s...
