    Broody hen gets some chicks

Do you need to keep that chicken and the chicks separate from other chickens? Will other chickens harm the chicks when they are so small?

    Broody hen gets some chicks

I didn't know you could give a broody hen chicks to raise - I'm learning loads here . I put eggs in the incubator a couple of days ago, and I have a broody sussex. Do you think she will still be broody by the time the eggs hatch? Is that what dummy eggs are for, to keep the hen broody? Do you...

I help please - incubator lost temperature

Thanks for the advice to carry on with them. I've candled twice since the drop in temperature and I think (hope) they are OK. This is my first time so I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at, but they do look like the candling photos in the learning center articles. Due to hatch a week on...

I help please - incubator lost temperature

This is my first time incubating eggs and I'm disappointed to get up this morning to an error flashing on the incubator and the thermometer I put inside reading 20 degrees centigrade. The eggs have been in there 9 days. Will the temperature drop have killed them? Should I start again with fresh...

    Salt for calibrating a hygrometer

I've found info on calibrating hygrometers on cigar websites which say regular table salt is fine, so I will go ahead and use that.

    Salt for calibrating a hygrometer

The info on calibrating a hygrometer says to use Morton Canning salt, but I'm in the UK and can't find it, or any kind of canning salt. Can I use table salt, or sea salt instead?

Best breed for meat that can live free range

Thanks for the replies. Looking at the comments on redcaps in the breeds section of byc it explains why mine have done so well free ranging, they are obviously tough birds. I'm in the UK so no climbing predators here, so long as I could persuade the birds to get well off the ground they should...

Best breed for meat that can live free range

I've got my incubator and on Monday I'm off to our local poultry auction to buy hatching eggs . I'm after a breed to raise for meat that can live range free in an area of woodland. My plan is to put a coop high enough off the ground to keep them safe from foxes at night. I've got a couple of...

    Hi to all at BYC's

Hi Everyone, Found this site while searching for info on incubating eggs. I've kept hens for eggs for a couple of years, and now want to raise them for meat too, hence purchasing the incubator. Glad to find this great site and lots of knowledgeable people to get advice from. Can't wait to get...

    hygrometer advice please

Thanks for the advice. I have ordered one. I've kept a few hens for eggs for a couple of years, but want to start raising them for meat too now, and figured an incubator would be more reliable than waiting for hens to be broody. Looking forward to getting some eggs in there.

    hygrometer advice please

Hi, Just bought my first incubator and wondering what type of hygrometer to get. I've seen some battery powered ones on ebay. Do I just put it in the incubator and leave it there? Thanks for the help. Julie x.
