Dealing with bird mites; my home, my hens, my itchyness!

So here is my story... I got my very first 3 hens for free from some neighbours. BIG mistake. They had parasites. One of the older hens had scaly leg mites. I tried everything, and was never able to completely rid her of the scaly leg mites. So some years later, I simply gave all my chickens...

Silver spangled Hamburg roo over various hens, starting to hatch!

So all the dark babies are from the white hen or the blue hen?

Waterfowl for Meat Production Thread - Ducks, Geese, and Muscovies

I'm hoping to revive this thread too. I am curious what weigts people are getting on their geese after processing. I did 5 recently and they were only 5-6 lbs. they look nice but I was expecting larger. I google imaged "christmas goose" and they all look like mine, not super meaty. My geese are...

Keeping turkeys and peafowl with other birds?

I have my place set up well right now for ducks & geese on one side, chickens on the other. Each has their own coop, and when I grow meat birds they have a completely separate area. My question is, where if anywhere could I house turkeys and peafowl? I'd like to keep a pair of each, but I'm kind...

    Hands on hatching and help

This is a little blurb I did on backwards birds. I decided to post it because it happens to me a lot! I'm not sure why, but they still all do fine with my help.

How many of you FULLY Free Range your Cornish X Meaties? Tractors do not count.

To follow up to my earlier post, all my chickens are now in the freezer and it went great! In total out of 52 broilers I lost 5. The first 3 all went on day 4 and 5 (chicks were shivering when I got them from the truck company), and then one at 4 weeks and one at 5 weeks for unknown reasons...

How many of you FULLY Free Range your Cornish X Meaties? Tractors do not count.

This is my first year doing broiler chickens but I knew I wanted them to have happy outdoor lives. Thanks for your post as it gave me the confidence to try my own "version" of free range when I had a lot of people telling me it would not work. I live in BC Canada. I started my 1 day old chicks...

    Duckling with wet feather?

I seem to be a magnet for rare and odd problems haha

    Duckling with wet feather?

I checked for parasites, nothing that I can see. He looks normal for a day after I wash him with soap and towel fluff him. Then back to this. And yeah he preens himself etc all normal. I got him at a day old from the hatchery and thought he was still wet (I know her so she let me take them a bit...

    Duckling with wet feather?

There is something off with my ancona duckling. I have two of them from the same place and the other one is normal. This one baby seems to always look wet. Duckies have access to a pool for cleaning, nobody is picking on it, has dedicated duck and goose starter feed, etc etc and nothing else is...

GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Hey Ducky, Depending on where you live keeping wild birds may be illegal (it is where I live). Wild animals generally always do better in the wild, so if your goose flies away I would let him. And it seems the puffiness is all gone after a day so it must have been fluid retention! All three are...

GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Hey Pete & everyone, Your hatching guide has been invaluable to me in my goose incubation. I have had excellent results until I tried eggs from another farm recently. I had been getting very nearly a 100% hatch rate in a homemade incubator with my own eggs, pilgrim x tolouse type geese (not...

Some egg candling videos & general info

While there do seem to be good resources out there, when I was doing my research (and continue to do lol!) I found good, knowledgeable and proven information was not super easy to come by. I don't claim to be an expert, but I wanted to share what I've been doing because it has worked really well...

Some egg candling videos & general info

I started to upload some of my egg candling and miscellaneous videos about incubating on youtube. I'm still fairly new to it and so far have only done ducks and geese, but I have had really good results and everything is homemade. Here's a link, feedback is welcome...

My incubator got to 70 degrees!

That happened with my ducks and geese once. They might be a day late but if nothing else is wrong they should still hatch. Just get them back to normal and give them a chance :)

building a incubator from a wine cooler

This is rad. I have a similar cooler I'm getting ready to alter although I don't plan to get quite as intricate as you have. I'm hoping I can replace some components with ones that come ready to do what I need rather than rewiring them. I'm sure it's not difficult but if I try and learn too much...

    Homemade Incubator

So I bought this nice little cooler (doesn't work) with the intention of taking the guts out and making a nice cabinet incubator out of it: Has anyone else altered a cooler like this who could throw out some advice on good ways to alter it? I'm hoping I can use some of the wiring etc inside...
