    Coop pics****

Here in North Texas the biggest concern is ventilation. Its very hot/humid in the summer and the low in winter can go to 20 but usually no lower than 27. Its our spring storms that are of a concern they can be vicious so the coop faces north/west with protection on its south/west side for the...

    MY baby hen

Cocci needs to be treated for a longer time then just one treatment (unless your one treatment was 2 wks long:). You might try giving her some cold watermelon to keep her hydrated. If she doesn't go for the watermelon you'll know she's pretty sick as its like candy to them.

They sell some of the grain mill (North Texas Farmers Coop) products at the farm feedstore in Canton also. Can't remember the name of the road its on but its the one on the south side that comes out of Kaufman (just before the intersection on the southwest corner) which would be closer to you...

    Calico Cochin Thread

The mille fleur coloring (which calico is) darkens as they get older and when they molt the first time will also change. He is just very diluted in color.

    Calico Cochin Thread

Calico is a "nickname" given by some in the US for incorrectly marked/colored mille fleur cochins (I have calicos so understand the love of the coloring). Mille Fleur should have white at the tips of the feathers to create the "mille fleur" pattern (see mille fleur d'uccles for a good...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

hehe grow kale.....growing anything in this sun and hard black clay means raised beds and a lot of water etc. just isn't worth it. However once our crazy digging pyrenees Wally (he digs to get cool) is no longer with us I hope to put in some raised beds (want to grow fall/winter veggies like...

bnjrb - what side of Dallas do you live? I'm over in Forney...did you know that Greenville has a grain mill? Its right downtown. I've not used their chicken feed (don't go thru 50lbs fast enough) but have used their rabbit for years along with other large animal feeds. Its always fresh and...

I absolutely love the camper coop. That is one of the nicest ones I've seen and I wouldn't mind having it at all.

I'm thinking if I needed to add shade cloth I'd add cup hooks and use the grommets on cup hooks hanging from the roof. Tarps work! When we had the "ranch" our llama/goat "condos" were cattle panel shelters covered in tarps. The tarps lasted typically 3 years in the shade before they degraded...

They sell "solar" style ones that are grey or solid ones. The newer better quality ones do much better in our sun. But yes the clear was so they would have plenty of sun in the winter. If we should loose a tree we will add a curtain of shade cloth just under the panels. That stuff is wonderful!

Here you go....12 x 5 x 7 with the coop being 3 x 5. 1/2 in hardware cloth top all the way across (incl. coop area) and sides. I love it - its 100 degrees out and the girls are doing fine. There is now a perch on the left that goes from the front left lower brace to the back lower brace. The...

    Covered run help needed...

I would bury a foot of wire or put it at a 90 degree angle along the ground and cover with some dirt. Burying it really isn't that hard especially if you soak the ground a bit, use a pick axe and easier to do now then later. If you have access to a "ditch witch" that is used for digging...

Funniest Things A City Slicker Has Ever Said To You?

As to the salt and birds.....actually it's true.....that's the whole point of the lesson for kids! If you can get close enough to a bird to put salt on its tail your close enough to catch it.

    New to Desert Chicken raising

I'm not in the desert, but just over the "block" from you in Texas. Most of the info you see on coops, etc. is for the cold. There is one very nice AZ setup here, search coops for the heat. His coop is up against a stone wall. Working with our heat/TX sun was the most important thing for me...

    I think i have a rooster!!!

Keep in mind though that you wouldn't want to hatch any eggs from the hens if they are out of the same clutch (bro/sis). He also may not remain your fav as roosters personalities usually change as the flock becomes "theirs".

    Newcomer need some help please

Get rid of them immediately. Disinfect everything. Its not worth it, especially for a newbie. Please report the chickens to your local ag/state extension/usda office. Chickens are livestock and you need to treat them as such. I know that can sound cruel but unlike a dog or cat, sick...

    Texas

I'm for the game camera. Many of the folks moving to Texas don't expect country living, i.e gunfire right outside their fence during dove season. Worry how that attitude will change Texas.

    Chicken Coop Lighting

The only time you would want to add light would be in the winter so that they get 12 hours in order to keep laying. So unless you are in Australia they need to be able to go to bed in the summer at dusk. I would only add light in the winter if they are slowing off laying and the laying is...
