My friend has a large mixed flock, her roo is a French blue copper maran and she has a bunch of different breeds and mixes of hens: Australorps, ameracauna, barred rock, blue copper maran, buff brahma, Cochin, golden laced Wyandotte, and some I don't recognize like a flighty small black hen (not...
My mama buff Orpington. She had 6 little fluffy butts
And my mama bourbon red turkey, who's eggs all went bad. She ended up adopting a 4 week old Orpington chick as her own baby. They still sleep snuggled up together.
Thank you! I opened it up big enough that, once I pulled his head out a little, I could see his yolk wasn't totally absorbed yet so I put him in a cup still with his bottom half in the shell and then back in the incubator. Hopefully in a few hours!
Hello! My very first ducklings are hatching today, they are from mixed breed eggs I won in a raffle.
Three are already out (and adorable), three more are zipping, and then one I thought wasn't doing anything until one of the newly hatched chicks bumped the egg enough for it to roll over and I...
Thanks, I think so, and my son is madly in love with him!
Ok, yeah he just seemed so small for that age. I looked closely and I see little tail feathers starting. He cracks me up with his tiny wings, so different than the chicks and poults I'm used to.
Ok, I will try to weigh him! Yes I understand about the photos, all were taken yesterday but the one in the car and the one in the bath look like two completely different sizes!
When do they start to get feathers usually?
He's so sweet, I don't mine him staying in for as long as he needs, just...
I bought a duckling and some chicks from a woman who was ill and couldn't take care of them any longer. She told me the chicks were 2-2.5 months old but they have got to be 4 weeks olds tops. The duckling she told me was 4-6 weeks old. I don't know ducks so I'm not sure at all if she's correct...
Yeah, that's totally a rooster. A hen won't get wattles like that until point of lay, about 20-25 weeks (varies by breed of course, but not this young).
Hello! I'm not 100% sure if this is a rooster. It looks very red in the face but it's wattles and comb are smaller than all the other roos' I have.
It's a 12 week old buff Orpington.
Thank you both very much! I ended up putting the mama back in the main flock (no aggression from the other gals but the roosters mated the poor dear every five minutes for the first half hour or so!) and moved the babies into a wire dog crate inside of the coop. It's not ideal but I had three...
Hello!
My first successful broody hen Hatched her babies out around the 30th of March, so they are about 4 weeks old. She still covers them up at night and doesnt seem annoyed at all by them during the day (they are isolated in a pen together, away from the main flock), but she just laid an egg...
Buff Orp chick, just hatched an hour before, just fluffy enough to come out of the incubator so I stuck it in my shirt to keep warm while we cuddled :)
I realize this is quite late. Did your egg hatch? I had one just like that, was told it was a saddle shaped air cell. It hatched fine. I have another on my set that's currently on day 8. I have some funky air cells going on right now with this whole set and I'm wondering if it has to do with my...
I'm looking into raising quail too. I'm sorry the end of this whole thread had me snorting with laughter. As for the poop eating, I don't imagine they will eat it unless they are starving but I only have experience with turkeys and chickens to go off of. With them, other than a curious day old...
Ok I candled again tonight and the air cells are growing upward, so it looks like keeping them upright was the right idea. I had set 24 eggs plus the broodys two poor tossed about eggs, had one early quitter and 25 active little embryos! Add this to the ten turkey eggs that are all moving and...
