    Any ideas?

I got these from a new friend last night. The Mama is a Pekin, and she had 4 drakes - a Mallard (she kept the baby that looked like a mallard), a Pekin, a black and white Runner, and a Cayuga. The mallard and Runner drakes disappeared I got three yellows which will be Pekins, but the black...

    Huge learning experience!

Well, I'm one year into having chickens. The oldest flock (1 yr.olds) consisted of 8 large breeds, 3 Cochin's and 4 ducks. I started out using wood mulch and shavings, then covering with straw as it became necessary. This is in an 18x25' chicken yard with two pre-built coops (of which all the...

    Any ideas?

I believe I bought this chick as a silver laced Wyandotte, but she has feathered legs! I just noticed this when I moved aver one into the new coop two nights ago. Can anyone ID this one?

    Bantam Cutie but what?

I've been a sucker for chicks this year! Five bantams were left after a week at the store so I brought them home. Three are going to be a dark buff to light red, but two are different - the one not pictures is a tad darker on the head. It so odd to see this dark red with a yellow to white head...

    Injured Hen - help PLEASE

One of my dogs got one of my chickens, we caught it before he killed her. All I can find is one puncture wound, which I filled with antibiotic, and a few broken blood feathers. She just lays with her head down and eyes closed, moving a tiny bit now and then, I've been getting her to drink...

Brand New Coop, need base suggestions

We are building a new coop, or as my hubby calls it, a Chicken Palace :) It is 12' x14', 10' high in front, 8' in the back. I'll have two 3' door on the front on top rollers for a 6' opening. There a side door, reclaimed old farm top screen door which I'll partly cover in the winter. Opposite...

Another crazy chicken lady building a new "coop"!

I began with chickens just last year. I got 1 Production Red, 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Black Sex Link, 4 Americaunas, and 4 bantams (one of which I found dead in the pen). I also got 2 Pekin and 2 Ancona ducks. As we grow a large vegetable garden, I knew I couldn't free range them. Instead we...

    Ducks with chickens

My husband and I have a discussion going on. I have 2 Pekin Ducks (both females I believe) which were raised separately from the chickens, and we've let them free roam on our 9 acres, almost all open with a 2-3 acre lake. It has taken several months to get them into the water, but now they'll...

    Hardwood mulch for bedding

Does anyone know of any issues with hardwood mulch for bedding? I use pine shavings in the coop itself, but to keep the yard from getting too mucky I've been using hardwood mulch when it went on sale for $1.50 a bag. Pine shavings disappear in one day into the ground. Thanks!

    Insulating my chicken yard?

I was totally new to raising chickens when I got my chicks in March and April. I've learned a lot since, especially in how much it costs to keep chickens! I thought getting a coop would be good - no problem. Well, wait, they can't free range as we have a very large garden (over 80 tomato plants...

Crazy Pekin Ducks won't go into the lake!

When I got my chicken coop, we stopped by Tractor Supply to see if they had any interesting chicks. I had not planned on getting ducks, but my hubby said "Look! They're only $1 each!" So we picked out two cute little yellow ducks. I have to mention, I am absolutely new to chickens and ducks...
