It's good to hear from you. I'm not a fan of this format either. BYC has become a chore to use rather than a place to easily chat with people. I hope you have luck rehoming as many chickens as you want. I'm only keeping my 3 oldest hens and a rooster this winter. I'm sorry to hear about your...
No eggs here. The roosters aren't even crowing much. I wish there was more fall weather this year. We didn't get through our fall cleanup. The barn roof is scheduled to be cabled in January and the guys will have to deal with the mess.
Emus are too big for our lot. We don't have an easy way to...
The weather. Ugh.
My SIL took in my pullets and extra cockerels. I have 4-5 cockerels to process and 3 old hens. I just spent the morning making them oatmeal. The early onset of this cold weather is taking its toll. My old girls are not tolerating it well.
Craigslist. The listing is all or none, and includes 10 roosters. I don't need to sell any, but if I do I'd rather have them all gone so I can replace the coop setup, reclaim the barn, and start over.
I'm making one last ditch effort to sell them all before winter. I listed it as all or none so I'm doubtful that anyone will bite. I accept this. It's only 18 birds and only 10 maximum will stay through the winter. The other 8 will be processed next month. So, it is what it is. Luckily the barn...
Thanks, all. I am doing a little each day. I am getting it done and should be able to get it all done before heavy snow fall.
You're right, it's a bit of frustration and blues and I have a lot to be thankful for. Once I shared this I already felt better, and to have your encouragement helped...
Talk me down, friends. I'm considering getting rid of all of my chickens. I have 10 cockerels under 6 months, 5 pullets under 6 months, and 3 hens of various ages. The prep needed for the coop before winter is frustrating. It'll be fine if I don't get to it all, but I really should do more. I...
It's been a while since I processed a chicken. What age is good for barnyard mix cockerels? They're crowing so I don't want to wait until 6 months old (end of December) but I want to get something worth processing. I have them on meatbird feed.
The weather preparation is starting here. I'm thankful that we'll have a couple nice days before the weather turns. We're getting an estimate for redoing our barn roof and wondering if we can sneak that in before snow flies. Unfortunately it requires some reframing so it might be a long...
no need to hide. They are huge compared to the rest of the chicks, but they're not colored like the cockerels. I have them in the grow-out-boy coop with meatbird feed. I'm watching them closely and will pull them out if they get more pullet-like.
If there's a chance that either of these 2 are girls, will feeding them meatbird feed for a short time hurt them? I can't imagine it would, but the way my 2 coops are set up doesn't allow me to feed different foods within the coops.
It has rooster red coloring on the shoulders. It's smaller than the others. It may just be lowest in the pecking order because other splash look just like that one. The only splash that doesn't have rooster red feather coloring is giant compared to the rest. The same for the black chick. It is...
I hatched 15 chicks. They are 3 months old. I separated these 8 thinking they're cockerels. I have 2 of the other 7 that also appear to be cockerels. I'm double checking because a cockerel hatch rate of 10/15 seems high, but also we aren't keeping 8 extra cockerels through winter- hence the...
