    Soft eggs

Hi Small Flock! If you put "soft eggs" in the search box at the top of this page, you will find a couple of threads about this. I also have hens(8) who have not been laying for very long. When they started laying I was finding two soft eggs at a time. I think it happened twice. Then it...

Getting pullets to sleep on the roosting bar?

Hi pilotnbr1. I have read that chickens are blind in the dark. That's why they stay on the floor if they fall off the roost in the night. I've also read of them breaking legs when they fall from a high roost. I do know that I have two cherry branches for roosts. They are also about 2.5 inches...

    Soft egg laying under roost

TERRY4 that is a good point. I don't really need to add the eggshell. I am already feeding them kale. It's 10% calcium. She didn't lay today so I'll see what happens tomorrow. Some people have said that the problems could be low potassium which they need to process the calcium. The kale is...

    Soft egg laying under roost

Hi TERRY4..were you talking to me? Yes, their whole run is dirt, sand, and grit. I also have a mixture of "grit" that I paid for which is virtually sand & oyster shell. I have a 50# bag of oyster shell, and I also have two 25# bags of gritty sand I bought from home depot. The bottom of their...

Silver Laced Wyandotte - Pullet or Roo? -- June 13th- 8 WEEKS OLD- new photos

Hi Vickery!!! My SLW, Chicken Noodle is now quite beautiful. I just replied on a different thread because she is laying "rubber" eggs. Gonna work on giving her some additional potassium as well as another source of calcium. All my hens get oyster shell but she may not be eating it? When she...

    Soft egg laying under roost

I have had a chicken laying soft eggs for a while now. My 8 hens were just 23 weeks old yesterday, but they have been laying for over a month. I wasn't able to figure out which one was laying the soft eggs until this morning. I was in their run, and I looked down to see my SLW all fluffed up...

Black spots on chicken's comb, wattles, and earlobe

A couple of my hens got this. It wasn't a bad case. Just small black spots on the comb, and a few on the wattles. It started with my white leghorn. I used some grapefruit seed extract on it, and then oregano oil. I put it in their water, and some diluted in olive oil directly on the spots...

    Post Pics of your Leghorns

This is my leghorn. I saved her from a pack(14) of barred rocks. She was about 18 weeks old when I got her. Named her Foggy. She is quicker than lightning, and has flown into the neighbors yard once. I had 6 original hens that I raised from week old chicks. They will still throw an...

Black spots on my chickens combs

I had 3 or 4 of my 8 hens with little black spots on their combs, and wattles. It started on my white leghorn so I thought she was just being pecked. She does get pecked by some of the other girls. Then I found this thread which was very helpful. I decided after reading the thread, and...

    Chickens scared of colour yellow?!

I know this thread is 2 years old but....tonight I had 3 of my 8 hens who would NOT go back into the coop. The sun had gone down, and they would come within 20 feet of the coop but no further. I tried luring them with their favorite mealworms. Then I tried some dandelion greens. They were in...

Black spots on my chickens combs

Hey Chictweet! Thanks for your post, and all of your investigation. I think my girls may have the dry form of the virus. It started on my leghorn who gets picked on by a few of the other girls. I thought maybe it was a peck injury. But tonight I gave all of my 8 girls a look over. It seems...

    Can Chickens Eat Grapes?

I think the chickens will like whatever grapes you have to give them. There are two kinds of grapes in my yard. The ones I have fed them are "Thompson Seedless", because I read that you shouldn't give them grapes with seeds.(not sure why or if that's valid). My other grapes are "Concord"...

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

I have 8 chickens. 2 Barred Rocks, 2 RIR, 1 SLW, 1 Buff Orpington (these 6 are 19 weeks old today), 1 White Leghorn, 1 Welsummer (these two are 18 weeks). These chickens now have red well developed combs, and wattles: 1 BR, 1 RIR, SLW, WL. Last week I started finding small brown eggs. I got...

    Post Pics of your Leghorns

Chicksn Coffee my leghorn, Foggy, is about the same age as yours. They could be twins(err...triplets). She is very aloof, and a great FLYER! Once I catch her she likes to sit on my lap and eat a couple of mealworms.

If you use PDZ and/or sand, PLEASE reply! :)

I forgot I was gonna post my coop before I cleaned it today. It took me about 10 minutes to "scoop the poop", and a few feathers out. I had done it about 3 days ago. The amount retrieved barely covered the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. Afterwards, I sprinkled a little PDZ inside, and in the...

If you use PDZ and/or sand, PLEASE reply! :)

I know this is an old post. But I wanted to add my experience in case someone was reading it for help. I have been using sand (construction grade)in my coop, and in my run. I tried straw first, and that was way too messy, and too time consuming to keep cleaning out. I have about and inch of...

    Sevin Dust on your chickens?

In case anyone is interested there have been studies done on carbaryl/sevin. The results are not good. I know a lot of people with chickens swear by using this stuff on mites. Just because you don't see something happening doesn't mean that it's good to use. Here is an article about tests...

    Sevin Dust on your chickens?

Keesmom that sounds interesting. Good luck with your research. I did find a spray for the coop, and also one to use on the birds. The one for the chickens is made with garlic juice, and one of several essential oils. The spray for the coop is just cooking oil, water, and dish soap.
