I am not positive its not the coop set up. It is small and the roosts are not very high. It is a prefab coop that we got talked into by a local chicken farmer (so I believed he knew what he was talking about). But it has been fine for almost a year. Did they just suddenly decide it doesn't work...
I can't really lock them in, because their coop is way too small for them to stay in all day. I just wonder what else may be keeping them from going in at night. They will go in to use the nesting boxes, but not to sleep.
I have three chickens that are just over a year old. They have been out in their coop and 'putting themselves to bed' (going into their coop on their own at dusk) since last summer. But for the last week they have not been going in, but trying to sleep on top of the coop roof. So each night...
My girls have been 3/3 for the last week We even have collected enough to gift our first dozen! They went to our neighbor to make up for the mornings that they may get woken up by our bagawking girls who want out of their coop.
Chickens don't eat or drink at night, so as long as they are let out around dawn and not locked in until dusk it is not a problem to have the food in the run. I don't have food and water I my coop for space reasons and they are fine.
Now that all of my ladies (3 of them) are laying we are having eggs for lunch every Sunday. We eat about 10-12 for a family of four. And usually my dudes get eggs for breakfast one day a week. I'm still buying eggs for baking though
We are in North Bend, so I totally know what you mean. We do have some additional colder days than you (I'm at about 1,000 ft above sea level) but its always very damp/moist. I have covered part of the run with a tarp to help give more dry space. And it helps, but no where is actually ever...
I don't know the answer to your question, but my parents are in Apollo Beach. I recognized many of those cities Good luck with getting some chickens, they are so cute and fun!
I'll have to pay attention next time I go that way I'm sure it was nice to be there, those houses are gorgeous! Its good to be off on another adventure too. My parents moved from PA to FL to live up their dream. I saw a small flock hanging out by the road in the Uplands and it made me giggle...
Ogress, I probably pass your old house daily We live in Wilderness Rim. The chickens were a bit ticked off at this weeks snow. But wait till next week, ladies. Its supposed to snow all week!
No rooster. My lead hen is usually my Buff Orpington (Peepers), next comes an Easter Egger (Brownie) and last is another Easter Egger (Stripers). Although sometimes it seems that Brownie is on the top of the ladder. The only thing that is for sure is Stripers on the bottom. She's awesome, but...
Welcome I work in Sammamish, but live n North Bend. We have three chickens that we got this spring as day old chicks (2 EEs and 1 BO). They have been lots of fun for all of the family (I have two elementary boys). We bought our coop from Baxter Barn, and we have visited many times before the...
I make our yogurt with whole milk. The chickens seem to like it no matter what is with it. Usually they get plain, but they are just as happy if there is honey mixed in (leftover from my kiddos) and really like it with oats too (again leftover from the kids). I think as long as there is not alot...
My EEs only started laying last week at 32 weeks. One is laying mint green eggs (so it was easy to tell) and the other seems to be laying pink eggs (which I had originally attributed to my BO who lays light tan eggs). The eggs will come
Whew, that was quite a storm! I'm just glad we didn't float away, and we live on a mountain My girls are definitely happy too. They also somehow found a dryish spot for some dust bathing yesterday. During all the wind and rain my BO Peepers kept yelling at me (BAWK! BAWK! BAWK!) as if it was my...
