I got turned at an early age. I used to show goats at the livestock show and one year my grandfather fed me my own goat to prove a point. So now I don't even flinch when thinking about those kind of things. It will happen to most of our chickens eventually. They will go from egg layers to dinner.
That is a lot of chickens. We have about 17 if you include the two Olandsk dwarfs that hatched last week. Try to find them homes on here, there is a whole forum dedicated to buying, selling, and trading. Surely, someone in this area will take them. If not you might, however gruesome it sounds...
I don't know anything about Lancaster, PA, but down here in Texas some cities require that you get a permit to have chickens or there are specific requirements of where the coop must be. Did they state why your in violation?
It sounds like your dog is very loving and probably safe to keep the chicks around him. However, dogs can get coccidiosis from bird droppings from wild birds, so there is always the chance that the dog could transmit it to the chickens.
Hi, welcome to South Texas. I too live in the Corpus Christi Area. As for dealing with the heat and humidity just keep hydrated and wear light colored clothing. How are your chickens dealing with the heat?
Thanks so much for this article. My family was really worried about a chick that was struggling to hatch. We waited and waited and waited some more. Thanks to your article we knew when to intervene and did so successfully. We didn't have to assist as much as we thought so now the chick is acting...
Thanks, this was my first time helping with any sort of hatch. My mom's grandmother had chickens so she was very knowledgeable about what equipment she needed to hatch these eggs. Basically all I did was make sure that they humidity and temperature was perfect. When they hatched she is the one...
Okay managed to get a good picture of our 4 week olds in our home made broader. The red cups are to keep the chicks from jumping on then pooping in the food and water.
I will try to get some new photos to show everyone the rest of our flock. My mother (reindeermama) actually owns the flock. She has picture of the baby Olandsk dwarfs here on incubators anonymous thread, so here they are. We had to assist the last chick hatching (bottom picture right).
So I have noticed that a chick that we had hatch on this Saturday at around 5pm and put in the broader today seems to have balance issues. When it hits any sort of uneven ground it tends to stumble and fall on its back. It cannot seem to get back on its feet without a nudge from a finger. It is...
