underdeveloped lower beak in gonzo chick

I got her to drink from the nipple waterer! She can sort of eat, so hopefully if she gets enough water she'll take more mash from me later today. (I have one of those outrageously priced Eglu cubes and they come with a waterer that has three metal, er, pins the chickens peck and the water...

underdeveloped lower beak in gonzo chick

I thought the top beak had overgrown but it's that the lower beak isn't growing. She can eat, a little, though she makes a mess. She is scrawny compared to the other chicks. Skin and bones. I hate the idea of euthanizing her when she clearly *wants* to live -- she's trying to eat, she's...

    gonzo beak chick

I'm back from the vet and the news isn't good. The problem wasn't overgrowth of the top beak but undergrowth of the bottom one. She hasn't been able to eat well and is so light compared to the other chicks! They recommended to try syringe feeding and that's not easy! Any tips? All the...

    gonzo beak chick

I have no idea how to trim it! I tried and she squealed any time I tried even the smallest trim. I'm going to see how the vet does it and then I'll be more confident. Maybe she'll grow into her 'nose'.

    gonzo beak chick

Ok Thanks. There is a vet clinic that handles chickens so I'll talk to them today. She's from My Pet Chicken, so it's just bad luck on my part. I hope this is manageable though because she has just the greatest colors and I want to keep her -- she's an Easter Egger and we want cool colored eggs!

    gonzo beak chick

One of my new chicks has a giant overbeak! It's not crossed -- I read about those. But it sure isn't normal. She spends a LOT of time shoveling food out of the feeder to eat but I do see her getting some food. They are just 2 weeks at this point. I tried clipping the end with nail trimmers...

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Love the tripod support for the roost in the post earlier! I just moved mine up in size. I know I have only three but this brooder was looking way too small. Now they are in more of an enclosed space with high walls (still need to get some chicken wire to at least put over the top when...

    What kind treats for chicks

I'm worried about that too. I put in fine sand thinking they would sand bathe and they started to gobble it like it was the best thing ever! I took it right out. I have given mine some uncooked oatmeal so I want them to have a little grit. At the local feed/pet store they have BLUE bird...

oatmeal for 3 week old chicks?

Will they be ok without grit? I bought some white sand, very fine, so they can dust bathe. This weekend it will be nice enough for them to spend some time outside and have something other than shavings to bathe in. They loved the oatmeal, just a tablespoon for 4 chicks. I sprinkled some of...

    brooder cleaning

I was warned but I'm still amazed at how much poop 4 chicks can make. Those of you with 25 or more, wow. What sort of cleaning should I be doing? The chicks are on pine shavings and I put down wood to move the waterer and feeder up a little. They still poop in one or the other at least once...

    buncha chick questions

Thanks everyone. Some more questions. How do I keep the brooder clean? I've been picking out the poo and adding a little more pine shavings each day, and then replacing all the shavings once a week (which will be Wednesday this week). Is that ok? Should I do something different? I'm...

    buncha chick questions

I'm new at this so please bear with me! The chicks came last Wednesday and are doing well. They do keep trying to fly up out of the brooder. Is that normal? These are 4 chicks as family pets/eggs. We're trying to handle them twice a day but they are still a little skittish. I found that...

is it pasty butt or am I ocd?

I have four chicks -- wanted three but that's for another post -- and the Golden laced wyanadotte chick had some poop on her vent area. Twice when I cleaned it she pooped right afterwards so I'm glad I cleaned her, and now I just see a little next to the vent. Should I keep cleaning or is it...

dust etc for only three chicks in dining room?

We want them inside so the kids can play with them and get involved in the process. And by kids I guess I'm including myself! It will make them more like pets and that was my goal (and the eggs). Since DH is so allergic we don't have animals. My 8 year old flinches when a friendly dog wags...

dust etc for only three chicks in dining room?

Wow thanks everyone! I'll still plan to use the dining room but I'll clear space just in case in the laundry room (which seems silly what with all the clean clothes and all but they are in a machine...). It makes sense with all the feathers coming in that they generate a lot of dander. We'll...

dust etc for only three chicks in dining room?

Hubs is allergic to most everything, though allergy shots have helped a lot. I want to brood the chicks inside, only three, and I have a plastic base cage for them already. I wanted to put them in the dining room where we have a wood floor and I already have a light shelf for growing plants...

    Eglu Cube?

It looks perfect for me if I had wanted more birds. I have a tiny backyard, neighbors nearby and very little time. Not enough time to build a coop and while I have enough time to visit with the birds twice a day (at least! But some days just that), having a nicely made, easy to clean coop and...

    *your* oldest chicken still laying?

We'll be getting chickens for pets as well as for eggs. How long would we expect out chooks to live and past year 2, what sort of egg laying? I changed the subject to solicit replies. I'm really curious -- especially urban chicken folks who plan to have a few birds for a while. We're...

    Eglu owners please advise!

LindaN I looked at the Eglu forums but as guest cannot post questions. The responses here have been great. Everything in the Bay Area is at least 3X of anywhere else (how else can we have $800K houses with 2bd &1ba?) so thinking about mats and labor, not to mention time, and I'm going to go...

    Eglu owners please advise!

MeanQueenNadine you wouldn't buy it again, is that what you mean? I don't plan to move it around -- I'll put down wood chips and try to let them range in the fenced yard when possible. Was that the only problem? Where do you keep the food and water bins? Sounds scary that something tried...
