    Ventilation vs. Draft

We'll be putting up our coop/run in the next few weeks and I'm really in need of some visuals. I know ventilation is very important, however, I don't understand drafty versus well-ventilated. I'm a visual person and can't seem to find any images of what to do and to avoid,if that makes sense...

    Proper ventilation location?

I've read that ventilation is essential and lots of it. However, is there a science to tbe placement? Does it need to be across or parallel with the roosting bar...things like that. I'm afraid I'll make it to where there's a draft and I'll get my chickens too cold. I'm not sure if this makes...

    Farm vs. Feed Store chickens

We're looking to buy gentle, egg laying hens. We'll not be showing the ladies or entering them into any contests...there are several feed stores much closer to us than farmers. What should we be looking for or asking at the feed stores? Are feed stores good places to purchase hens? Pros and cons?

What do you do when a tornado is in the area?

My husband and I are curious what people do when the tornado sirens go off. Do you get your chickens inside with the rest of your pets? I'm going to make them diapers for occasional house visits, but I was really wondering what others here did...

    Chicks and Coops

I am wanting to get chicks ASAP. Not sure about the breed just yet, however, we will be out of town for a few days in late December. How old do chicks have to be before you can safely leave them outside, 24/7, in their enclosed coop/run? We're in N Texas, so, we do get freak ice storms. We're...

    Hardware cloth around the perimeter...

(For the area just on the outside of the coop/run area) Is it absolutely necessary to do this? Is 12" really necessary and are there any alternatives??

Anticipating for Predators Based on Location?

Designing our chicken run and husband wants to use chain link (we have a ton of it) for the top/roof/ceiling. Is there anything in North Central Texas (Arlington, TX) that would be able to get through that? We'll have hardware cloth on the sides and in the ground. I was just worried something...

    Chicken Run

Currently designing a chicken run with a coop inside of it for a maximum of 4 hens. If the run is large enough, approximately 6'×12' or as small as 4'×8', is it cruel or neglectful to only occasionally let the hens roam the backyard (often times our gate is open and we wouldn't want an escape).

    Coop Poop

So...we're trying to design a small coop (4 hens) and we're curious what's the best way to clean the poop from the coop? Do you hose it out? Sweep? I'm lost and want to design something that's easy to clean and maneuver with the manure. I was thinking even a tile floor? I am in over my head I...

    Greetings from Arlington, TX!

Hello! My husband and I are looking to build our own coop and have 4 hens for pets and eggs. We've never done this before and are just now combing through coop plans, trying to decide what'd be best for our (future) gals! We're both obsessed with doing things the right and best way possible and...
