Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So just looking at this design is almost exactly what I am thinking only instead of laying the pad on the dowels, I would attach it to the top of the box and have the dowels for roosting. Anybody think this would work or would they get too cold?

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

So, I'm going to throw an idea out and somebody tell me if you have already done this. I'm thinking of making a box design that will hold the heating pad but also have roosts underneath for the littles to go. If that doesn't make sense think of it as a heating pad over the top of the roosts...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Thanks Blooie. It was amazing to see how quickly they quieted down tonight. Everyone is all snuggled in for the night now. They were quite active all day so it's nice to see them calm.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Thanks Aart and Blooie! Since it has decided to be teens below zero here I put the sweeter heater out with the big girls to give it a test run. It has worked great so far even though they are a bit afraid of it right now. Anything to take the edge off for them. The garage got down to 20...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hi all! I'm new to baby chicks and I will be getting an order or 30 come early Feb. I will be brooding 20 as 10 will be going to a friend. I really don't want to brood them in the house and would prefer the garage. I do have a sweeter heater that I bought, but I am debating whether the MHP...

    Huddle box in brooder

It's a variation on the mama heating pad method. Chicks born under mom, in the coop, in winter, in Minnesota would be just fine as they can duck back under mom if they get cold. This would simulate that. I would not use the incredibly bright light that they have in this picture but the...

    Huddle box in brooder

    Huddle box in brooder

So, I am trying to research different ways of providing heat to 20 chicks that I will be getting in February. I live in Minnesota. I am planning to set up my brooder in the garage. It will be draft free, however, the temp is going to be around 35 degrees in there. I have researched the mama...

    Minnesota!

Hey Everyone, So, I just ordered chicks for February. I have been reading on here how some people are brooding their chicks right in the coop. Granted I have not seen many from MN doing this. What do you all think? My coop is not insulated and I do not have any heat. I was planning to get...

    Minnesota!

Cluckies, my backyard is technically township. I'm on 2.5 acres and I only have one neighbor. They say they can't even hear the roo. If they ever have an issue I asked them to tell me and I will make soup. Honestly, I think they enjoy the free eggs so I don't for see it being a problem.

    Minnesota!

71 chickens would be a little overkill for me. :D I have 4 lavender orpingtons 3 hens and one roo, one jubilee Orpington hen, and to SLW hens. I am really enjoying the wyandottes and would like to continue with them, only a little color variation would be nice. Does anybody use supplemental...

    Minnesota!

Hi Everyone! I am new to chickens and BYC. I live in Elk River. I'm trying to plan for the spring already (maybe just wishing it was spring instead) by figuring out what chickens to add to my flock. Dang chicken math has already caught up with me. Anybody know or have, day old Blue Laced Red...

2 x 4 Welded Wire still not enough?

Honestly, I would use 1/2 inch hardware cloth around the run. I have my entire run, roof and all covered in hardware cloth. I have not had one issue with raccoons or even a mouse getting into my run. I even have a trail camera up that had several raccoons eyeing the run.

    Remove coop bedding?

Thanks for the replies. She tends to lay right next to the pop door in a corner of the coop. It is the same material as the nest boxes. I use koop clean. I think she might like it because she can see out into the run and watch everybody. I do not have a bar outside of the nest boxes, so I...

    Remove coop bedding?

    Remove coop bedding?

I have 5 lavender orpingtons-25 weeks, 1 jubilee-1 year old, and 2 silver laced wyandottes-22 weeks. Just thinking I should make my jubilee a nesting box in her favorite spot, but I doubt she will use it.

    Remove coop bedding?

My other chickens will be laying very soon and I don't want them following her lead. She is a 1 year old Jubilee Orpington.

    Remove coop bedding?

Yes, golf balls and plastic eggs filled with flour for weight. She completely ignores the boxes.

    Remove coop bedding?

Hi All, I am new here and have not seen this question answered...I have one hen that is laying out of my 8 total. She lays her eggs on the floor of the coop and completely ignores the nest boxes. Should I remove the bedding on the coop floor to entice her to use the nest boxes?
