Just want to say thanks for all your good advice. I bought my girls a new coop and wasn't sure how to get them to go in without my help. I put them in one day and when I returned they were all sitting on the ground complaining. I will take all of the good advice and use it.
I am so glad to see all these messages. My five girls ended up 4+1. We heard his/her call this morning and we will have to give him up. Neighbors have no issues with chicks but asked us to not have roosters. I know this all seems pretty obvious but what I know about chickens I'm learning...

I trust 6 months is about the laying time. I know this sounds pretty dumb but what is a nesting box. They have wooden boxes inside their coop and it's got pine shavings on the bottom. Do they need something else? And of course I'll put a fake egg down. I really know "0" about raising...
