Sudden Chicken Death Syndrome?

Pics
Well. I just had my first experience of a 'sudden death.' My enemy, the barred rock rooster, suddenly died. I was outside checking on the flock, and he comes around the corner of the house to flog me (his normal routine). I go out about 30 min later to do another check, and he is dead in the back garden. No signs of a struggle, no wounds, no blood, nothing. I have had chickens die, but it was always coming d/t illness or you KNEW a coon had gotten after them. Just strange. Here's a pic of the late rooster.

Is there such a thing as bird karma? I know a particularly obnoxious and thieving raven in my neighborhood finally landed on a power transformer and blacked out about 2 square miles. Makes ya wonder.....

So sorry your little one isn't doing well. I wish I could be of help but all I can offer is my sympathy that this is happening. My only advice would be to get her to a vet ASAP if you have an avian vet around.

I bought four buff orpingtons the other day, 4-5 months old. Today one was in the back of the coop, flapping around on the ground. I picked her up and she was totally limp. Probably died seconds later. She seemed fine earlier today, I don't really understand what happened. Maybe dehydration? She would stay in the back of the coop with two of the other buffs because she was afraid of the other chickens, perhaps never went to get water?

I called the feed store and thankfully they offered to replace her for free. Also glad I hadn't gotten attached to her yet. Would've been so sad if it were one of my 7 year olds.

I feel so bad for all of us. One of my hens just a year old was fine yesterday morning. I checked them throughout the day as I normally do. When evening came I thought she might have hopped the fence, just to my front yard, and still couldn't find her. She apparently laid an egg and dropped dead. I was so busy looking around for her that I didn't bother looking in the nesting box for about an hour. My little girl Pickles was just fine, healthy, great egg layer. Now I am down to 3. I can't believe how sad I've been to have lost her. Thank you everyone for all your stories as I have had these girls since they were 24 hours old.
