Best breed of quail for a neighborhood?

If you happen to live with an oppressive HOA, keep your birds out of sight. If you get some blue hairs making a stink about them, they're "pets" you see? Not livestock. They're pets that just happen to lay eggs that you eat.

How do you keep your automatic waterer from freezing in the winter?

Depending on the size of the room your cages are in, a Thermocube might work well. That's what I use. It is basically an outlet that turns on at 35F and off at 45F. Plus a small heater into it and let it go on/off as needed to keep everything from freezing. I use a 5-gallon pail watering...

    IncuView Experiment Fail

Thank you for the responses. The question about too little oxygen is a valid one. I have been closing the vent hole a little during lockdown to keep the humidity up during lockdown. Looks like I shouldn't do this! In fact, I may drill another hole or two since the factory vent hole in the...

    IncuView Experiment Fail

Kind of long, I'm sorry. But I am really frustrated here and wanted to include as much info as possible. I have been using an IncuView forced air incubator for over a year and haven't had a hatch rate over 50% - most have been much less than that, closer to 20%. I have redundant thermometers...

Mass, sudden death of week old chicks

Disregard. My 3 1/2 yo daughter admitted to "playing" with the chicks and that they "got sick". She knows better and it's the first time she did anything like this. I am keeping my cool and lecturing. Man, this sucks so bad.

Mass, sudden death of week old chicks

Holy cow. I had 10 seven day old chicks this morning acting totally normal. I get home from work and they are still acting normal. I fed them and gave fresh water like normal. A few hours later I check on them and every single one is dead. All are laid out with their legs sticking out...

    Quail incubation eggs

It can't hurt to wait another day or two IMHO. If nothing hatches after that, disect the eggs and see what they look like inside. What you see might indicate what went wrong. For example, no developement at all = not fertilized. Also, are you using two thermometers and hygrometers? If you...

    chick's in incubator

I'm in the same situation as the OP. A few chicks hatched 24 hours ago and I have some just starting to pip now. Just for clarification: they will be OK in the bator for up to 3 days without food or water?

All of my baby quail died

Any chance that you lost power during the 24 hour period and they got cold? Maybe when you weren't home to notice?

    Combining flocks?

Sorry for the confusion. I actually have 4 cages. Three of them have 5 hens and one roo. The other cage has 2 hens and one roo. I was thinking of taking one hen from each of the 3 cages and putting them in with the 2 hens. That way the 2 birds that aren't laying get some rest and start laying.

    Combining flocks?

I have 3 coturnix in one cage: 2 hens, 1 roo, all from the same hatch. The hens are not laying at all, and I think maybe the roo is stressing the hens too much. I have other cages with 6 birds in each: 5 hens and 1 roo. These are from different hatches. I thought it might be good to take...

I used 2"holes in 3" pipe. Here's a video of how I did it. Homemade Feeder

    Looking for local quail eggs.

I'm in Gilpin County. I can get you some eggs. Maybe we can meet in Ned one of these days.

Will Cots go inside at night?

I'm tossing the idea around of building an outside pen for my Coturnix birds for the summer that connects to their cages in a shed. Will the birds have enough sense to go inside their cages at night? I was thinking of having a plank to a door maybe 12" X 12" that leads inside to their cages.

    Lighting for quail

14 hours of light seems to be the recommended time for continued egg production during winter. I use simple LED Christmas lights on a timer to supplement light because they're cheap and easy and I see no decline in egg production in the winter. Some advocate for a more natural light...

Power failure during incubation, temp dropped really low

It was about 50% until lockdown, then up to about 70%. I am at high altitude (9000 feet). Can this cause any problems?

Power failure during incubation, temp dropped really low

Update: Out of the 47 eggs in the incubator, I had 2 hatch and survive. One other hatched but was malformed and died shortly after hatching. There were about a half dozen others that started to pip, but never made it. I opened all of the other eggs and about half had partially or fully...

    all who are hatching quail

I put 47 Coturnix in the incubator today. My first two attempts at hatching eggs didn't turn out so well, but I'm hoping I got the kinks worked out for this one. Luckily I have a steady supply of eggs, so the experiment continues.......

Power failure during incubation, temp dropped really low

I never tried candling. I thought it was kind of fruitless with quail eggs. Can't hurt to try I guess.
