Power outage halfway through hatch, please help

Thank you for quick responses! I'm sure they'll be fine, but if not, I'm still happy for the 8 that did hatch! There is so much info here, I am surprised I have had such a good first hatch already anyway. I had 100% fertility and only lost 2 to bacteria (blood rings). So 8/11 will be awesome...

    Bought my bator just now!

I am just now finishing my first hatch with my hovabator (no fan, no auto egg-turner), and I got great results. I started with 13 of my own silkie/polish eggs. After 1 week, candles and lost 2 to bacterial infections. All were fertile though (I love my roos!). Now it's day 20 and 8 of 11 have...

Power outage halfway through hatch, please help

First off, thanks to everyone for all the valuable information present on this site already, has helped me numerous times through this hatch, and I didn't have to bother anyone. Anyway, now it's day 20, and the power went out for about 45 minutes. 8 babies have already completely hatched, and...

Thanks for replies, I'm pretty sure it is a rat snake. I live in north Texas, by the way.

Eggs missing, no shells, probably snake, but brooding hen dead too?

Hi, reading through predator identification post, and pretty sure I have a snake, but wanted to make sure. Had a snake problem a few months ago, but he just ate babies and left the mama hen alone. Just this week I let another broody hen sit on 6 eggs, and have had no problems until last night...

I think snakes are coming at night and stealing my broody's eggs.

I had the same problem (well have as it happened again last night). Sorry for your loss, I'm seething too, and I have pet snakes. I'm pretty sure I'm going to sit out there with my shotgun though, to take care of the problem. I've been researching this today, and though I'm pretty new here on...

Animal control is on its way...Update post 73...

Thanks for the side advice, everyone. And sorry, I should have started a new thread. I think cayenne pepper and barbed wire might do the trick.

Animal control is on its way...Update post 73...

Well, I think I'm gonna have to put on my big girl pants and man up.. I've talked to her about it, and she seemed genuinely sorry, I just don't think they realize how much $$ and time and love go into chickens- they see them as a lesser animal, like a rat or spider, you know? He's talked to her...

Animal control is on its way...Update post 73...

Thanks for the input. It's grampas land, btw, so neither of us really has a say about that.. I think I'm going to have to go electric, cruising craigslist now. Atleast she's helped me to make the fence better enforced. I guess the real problem I have is that they're so ok with the situation. We...

I can sympathize with you. I'm having a similar problem and figured I'd post under this thread.. Sooo.. New to chicken raising, got chicks this spring, built an awesome coop/pen, and set my babies out once they were a couple months old. My future mother-in-law works at a shop not 50 yards...
