    Best kind of feed?

Hey, I'm wondering what's the best kind/brand of feed for my chickens. I've always heard to stay away from Purina because it's crap, but that's mostly the only stuff they sell around me. I've found a brand of organic I've been using, but I've also heard organic doesn't really matter--I just...

    EE Hen Won't Lay

I have an easter egger who won't lay. I've had the same six hens for about 7 months, and all of them are great layers except one of my EEs. She's about 1 year old. She has never once laid an egg. My other easter egger, who is the same age as her, is laying great. She has been sick a couple...

    Molting this time of year??

She's about 2 years old (I think). We've only had her for about 4 months, so I don't know what she did last year. She's a buff orp. Yes--her neck looks very bare--but she's still losing feathers all over.

    Chicken Tunnel/Moat

We've been letting our hens free range in the backyard, and it's time reclaim some of our yard back. I know they love free ranging, and it's better for them, so I still want them to be able to have some space to roam around--just not ALL over the yard. I've been looking in to chickens tunnels...

How do y'all prefer to hold your hens?

We got our hens last fall when they were about 6 months old, and they weren't used to being held. This is our first flock, so simple things like holding a hen is new to me!! I have a couple who are very stubborn and don't like to submit and be held. On the other hand, I have others who...

    Molting this time of year??

Okay, so tell me if y'all think this sounds like molting or something else. My leader of the hen pack, who has always been the biggest and healthiest, seems to be molting. Her feathers are falling out like crazy, and she's starting to look rough. She's also losing feathers around her face. I...

When are they too big for a hawk?

We live in GA and see hawks over us all the time. We've had our chickens for 4 months now and the hawks have never tried to get them...yet. Can anyone give me any insight as to why? I see the hawks swoop down to kill other pray around us. I have 3 big buffs, two easter eggers, and 1 cinnamon...

Mites all over yard, not on chickens

Maybe y'all can help me with this one. We bought our 6 month old chickens a couple of months ago (lesson learned there--will never buy anything other than chicks again). Once we brought them home, I immediately started noticing red mites all over our backyard. They're in the compost, even a...

    Chicken Sleeping in doorway

I have a chicken who just started sleeping in the doorway of our coop...like, halfway in and halfway out. We are currently fixing our coop door but once we get it back on there, I guess it shouldn't be a problem. But I do think this is weird--did any of yours ever try to sleep in the doorway?

Red mites found in compost bin...not found on chickens or in coop yet

I wouldn't have seen the mites, except for the fact that I rested my hand on what seemed to have been one of their "nests" and they were crawling all over my hand. Thanks for the advice. I did put DE in my dust bath mix, and I like the idea of painting DE on their roosting bars!

Red mites found in compost bin...not found on chickens or in coop yet

I found a large population of red mites in my compost bin today. I'm doing what I can do get rid of them since I learned they were there; however, it has been raining here for almost 3 weeks and it's difficult to get rid of them completely with all of this moisture. However, I'm worried...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

It turns out the hens I got are vaccinated. :( I guess I should've done more research before diving in! What are some of the cons of vaccinating chickens, other than it weakening their immune system? I found some unvaccinated chickens, is it a terrible idea to bring them into the flock, even if...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

This thread stuck out to me, as I am just a beginner at this backyard chicken-ing thing! We just got our first flock a couple of weeks ago, and I want our eggs to be non GMO, antibiotic free, and organic. Having that said, is vaccinating necessary? What about de-worming? Are there any other...

    Bully Hen

Hi all! I am relatively new to this site and am so excited to be raising backyard chickens! We just got our first flock a couple of weeks ago: 2 easter eggers, 1 cinnamon queen, and 1 rhode island red. The EEs and the cinnamon queen get along great. However, the RIR was pecking at one of my...
