As for weather my girls are doing better than I am, however I will be redoing their run so not as much snow gets in, used my small tiller to brake some of it out and shoveled it out was about 8 inches of snow and ice buildup
I have the water up on blocks but you know hay the girls can get when one finds a stray sunflower seed in bedding the straw starts to fly. I hope your hen gets through her molting soon, bad time a year not to have a jacket on,
lazy gardener I will try the water jug in the bowl. I would not...
Hows every one doing with the cold weather we had, my girls did good but think I need to close up a few eve vents there are 16 vents ( 8 front, 8 back) and loosing any heat the girls may be putting out. it is not drafty just a lot of heat loss. Been getting good egg production 4-6 most days (14...
I ended up getting the run shoveled and use a rake to turn things up and added a layer of leaves I reserved, it got the girl's out long enough to get some fresh air before it was time to go in the night
We are first year chicken owners and this roost set up is the best thing I built, the tarp swagging under it catches 90% of dropping, twice a week I sweep/rake off in to my shovel and put in the compost bin. Easy clean
Our hen passed away some time last night, now not 100% sure she was egg bound for when I did a vent inspection the other day there was no egg there. We do not know the age of these hens we got from my aunt and now thinking she was just on her way out. She was kept warm and comfortable her last...
Well our girl still has not passed the egg thinking might be 2 there, we got some extra calcium in her and another warm soak, she is trying to push but we are at a loss of what else to do....
Ok the Hen I was concerned about seems to be egg bound, I can feel one there and she has not eaten much in the last few days, she is drinking, I gave her a 20 min warm soak and massaged her and lubricated her vent she has some bloody fecal matter come out when I did . Also found out she has lice...
Being new to BYC this is good info thanks. When I built my coop I white washed the inside to help with prevention first thing and we also use diotamaceus earth in the coop. I give this warning though, anything that will harm bad bugs kill good ones so please use sparingly and one where you need to.
lazy gardener, I am with you on not jumping the gun and treating for no real reason that just lets the bad thing get use to the med and then meds not working, Now for my Update, I have been keeping an eye on my hen she seems fine, no other signs of bloody stool. Being new to this BYC thing I did...
Ok 2 things
First we got this cute little egg today, not sure what one of the girls though. Do you think there is anything to it...
Second one of the Eastereggers we got from my aunt has had soft mucusie poo, though it was just from her molting and transition to our place, today...
Thank-you for the additional vent it does suck and ever worse the animal control in the area tends to be a no show or call back on things most the time.
Sorry need to vent if anyone that seen my post and coop you know we planned for chickens and have adapted and made changes all summer with it and our run..... Have a neighbor that got 6 chicks in the spring before we did, now grown and laying, they have no coop just keeps them in a pen not much...
