Our hen passed away some time last night, now not 100% sure she was egg bound for when I did a vent inspection the other day there was no egg there. We do not know the age of these hens we got from my aunt and now thinking she was just on her way out. She was kept warm and comfortable her last few days that is all that matters. When the kids get home from school we will return her to Mother Earth for the cycle to start a new

Sometimes that's all you can do. I've been keeping chickens a number of years and I'm a healthcare professional and guess what... they die on me, too, and I often have no idea why.

All you can do is give them a good life.

Weather cooperated today and yesterday and we were able to make important progress on the winter bird habitat...

Been worried about how putting the plastic on would go for a long time, but it went fairly smooth and the structure came together well.

looks awesome!!!

Yesterday, I had some friends bring me a trailer load of leaves. Those went into the garden. Last night, I went to an other friend's house, and loaded the back of the truck full of leaves: all the way to the top of the cap. Some nice bags of dry, some loose, and some wet bags. Those will be put to good use. Still looking for an other 30 or more bags! Green house has nice mature bed of lettuce on one side, kale and maturing lettuce on the other side, has been undersowed with cold weather crops, but those may be a bust, as I can't keep the temp below 100* on a warm sunny day. Making good progress on the sun room in the coop, until dog chewed the plug off my jig saw.
