Broody hen sitting on nest, but.....

Thanks for your advice. I kind of suspected that this was an excercise in futility. If we find a rooster, should we just toss him into the coop, hoping he will set the pecking order? or...?

Broody hen sitting on nest, but.....

We once had a rooster and a pretty friendly group of birds. A possum killed all the birds but two hens, it broke my wife's and grand kids hearts. These birds were kindergarten projects, from the first years in each child's education. Needless to say, "a dark cloud fell upon the family". However...

Well, here we are about 6 weeks out with the hatchlings. They are growing like weeds, we have had them in the house in an open cage. We have been feeding Chick Chow :) and water. At 6 weeks we change the papers in the incubator about 4 times a day. I have a couple questions, I have already...

Researching Chicken Breeds (Couple Odd Questions??)

I hope this post is considered to be a legit question. I went to a website called Murray McMurray, on the website I was looking at the various breeds available and some of the terminology used seemed rather odd, such as "Straight Run" a purchasing option right after "All Males", "All Females", I...

Sleepy hen, doesn't lay, drinks excessively, watery diarrhea--treat for bacterial infection?

It's been pretty cold outside, here in NW Mississippi. My hen is not laying right now, I suppose because of the cold. They rooster and the hen are about 15 months old. Since the hen is not laying, is this a good time to treat our tiny "Flock" with wormer? Or is it to cold out. Temp 20~38 F.

I'm to understand most Chickens are like goats, in respect to the fact they will odften eat just about anything for food. We used to have a dog and we never fed her table scraps. But my wife, being my wife, insists that the chickens eat a variety of foods as well as the feed. So far we haven't...
