Comment by 'Hrhchazman' in article 'Winter Chicken Keeping'

Hi, did you ever get an answer to your question? We live in New England and have four Silkie hens. Two years ago on Valentine's Day we woke up to -7 degree temps. It was -7 in the coop too. (We have one of those outdoor thermometers in the coop that transmits the temp to a receiver in the house)...

Can chicken eat mint , if planted around a run??

Our girls love watermelon, and of course corn. But we try not to give them too much corn. They like tomatoes and cucumbers too. Every night before we go to bed I have to put some kind of "treat" out for them. If I don't they really let us know about it early in the morning. (Our coop/run is...

Can chicken eat mint , if planted around a run??

I have been thinking about planting mint around our coop/run to deter mice, ants, earwigs, etc. and did a search to see if it was safe for our girls. I came upon this thread, and found it very interesting. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I have been using peppermint oil, and though it...

    Standlee Flock Fresh

Thank you. We have been using the PDZ with pine shavings, but I think I'm going to look for the Standlee straw bales locally.

    Standlee Flock Fresh

I'm guessing you use some kind of deodorizer with the straw?

    Standlee Flock Fresh

Thanks Cindy. I have found a bunch of dealers within a 20 mile radius, I think I'll give it a try. We have been using the TSC pine shavings. No problems with them as we do use a coop deodorizer, but I would like to try an alternative.

    Standlee Flock Fresh

Not to sound stoopid, but how big is a bale, and where do you buy the Koop Klean?

    Standlee Flock Fresh

I would like to know your opinion of it too. I'm thinking of trying it in our coop, in place of pine (not phone) shavings. :lau

Wry neck...Treat or euthanize?? UPDATED with GREAT results!!

So it's been about two months now, and I am so happy to report that Penny is doing much better. After sitting with her for about an hour, at least twice a day, and feeding her vitamin B Complex, selenium, and vitamin E, (dosages recommended by our vet) about two weeks ago she started to show...

Wry neck...Treat or euthanize?? UPDATED with GREAT results!!

Good point about susceptibility. We have always given them water with Rooster Booster, and will continue to do so. I really hope the vet can do something for her. Will post developments. Thanks again, Charlie

Wry neck...Treat or euthanize?? UPDATED with GREAT results!!

Thank you both again for taking the time to reply. We have been giving her vitamin E, NutriDrench and PolyVisol (we stopped the PolyVisol) and feeding her scrambled eggs and sunflower seeds for three weeks. Our vet was out sick today, due in tomorrow, and she is supposed to call us. I think...

Wry neck...Treat or euthanize?? UPDATED with GREAT results!!

I'm no expert, and I could be wrong, but I don't think it's diet related because the other three girls are doing just fine. They all eat the same things every day.

Wry neck...Treat or euthanize?? UPDATED with GREAT results!!

Thank you for the reply. Her symptoms don't seem to fit the description for a thiamine deficiency as much as they do a case of wry neck. That's what we have been attempting to treat her for, and tomorrow we will talk to our aviary vet to see what she thinks. One thing that does seem a little...

Wry neck...Treat or euthanize?? UPDATED with GREAT results!!

How is she doing? We have been treating one of our girls for almost three weeks now. She doesn't seem to be getting any better, and it's painful to watch her. She seems to do best when we put her in an enclosed pen where she can peck at, and eat some grass. We give her vitamin E, 2 - 3 times a...
