Working on our coop so that we can get our chicks outside, and need help with size. I've read that there should be a minimum of 4 square feet per chicken. We plan to keep 12 birds total, and they will only be in the coop at night, free ranging during the day. Does that change the minimum...
I got them from a friend, who hatched them. They're supposed to be marans, ameraucanas, wyandottes, and buff orpingtons. Whether they're pure or the parents all ran together and the chicks are crosses of those breeds I'm not sure. I did get the opinion of someone else in another thread i started...
I'm in the U.S. I know the pertain I got the chicks from does occasionally breed Legbars. So maybe that's it? Here's some pictures of the same chick a week ago, that shows her legs better. She does have some patchy feathering on it's legs coming in.
I'm starting a new thread to see if anyone has an idea of this chick's breed. It has this crest like feathering on it's head. It's 5wk old. I'm supposed to have a mixture of wyandottes, buff orpingtons, ameraucanas, and marans. Do chickens even get crests?
Would you mind giving me some suggestions on the best way to do it gradually? I have so much to learn, and appreciate and respect the advice of those more experienced than myself. Thanks!
Thanks! I appreciate it. Those two I suspected. I'm going to have to figure or some way to give them more space. Maybe that will help settle things down between them. Are they too young to go outside in the coop if I put a heat lamp in it?
I've got 5wk old chicks I need to sex. They're getting too crowded now (pecking each other), and I have a home for as many cockerels as I want to rehome. I know it's early but I really need to downsize this group. I've got 18 left. This is my first time raising chickens. There are several who...
UPDATE: my sick little girl passed late last night. I've started seeing some of the other chicks looking puffed up, and spending more time under the heat lamp. They're all still eating and drinking, thankfully. I decided to go ahead and treat them all with corid. Hopefully this will prevent me...
I'm not feeding them medicated feed. We're trying to do things naturally, and didn't want to medicate them unless they needed it. The food does contain probiotics. It's naturewise chick starter/grower.
Sorry, I thought corid was an antibiotic. I'm new to chicken keeping.
I actually don't think it is coccidiosis anymore. She's having normal stools now. I've actually posted another thread about her in this same area, but I don't know how to link them together. It's like she had a seizure,or...
