OK...I put my hen back into the hospital crate. She's not wanting to eat much (there was some food in her crop) but she is drinking a lot of water. There's a mash of oatmeal and a little feed but she's not touching it. Now she's having runny, watery poop. I'm assuming this is because she's...
One of my hens had a crop impaction. I isolated her and we got it cleared out and this morning I put her back into the run with the other chickens. She isn't eating as much as usual today. Is this normal after going through a crop impaction?
They've got plenty of room. Their run is 150 sq ft ( and eight feet high) for four chickens. Plus the coop and under it. And yes, she can get away and hide. When I let them out in the evening for their free ranging I've noticed this bullied bird is staying back in the run for quite a while...
I have four red sexlink girls. They're about six months old and have been together since hatching. I've had two of the bigger girls that fuss at each other about dominance (posturing and chest bumping) from time to time, but the smaller two have been left alone. Well, the one who wants to be...
Thanks for your reply. My nesting boxes are the second highest thing in the coop (rooting bar is first). Like I said, we've have seven eggs with no problems. I was hoping this was just an anomaly. Going to have to see if we have a golf ball in the house to put in the nesting box.
Thanks again.
Not quite sure what happened, but there was a thin shelled egg (some of my girls just started laying a little over a week ago) that was eaten on the floor of the run. There was a mess and broken shell, but only on the floor. For them to have gotten it out of the nesting box (not our first thin...
This morning it was Schrodinger's chicken when I went to open the coop and feed the girls. She came out and seemed a bit better, but still off. I came home this afternoon wondering if I was going to be a chicken short. I went to the the run and she's right as rain. She's running around...
My big girl was fine this evening. She was running around with her coop mates, eating and having a good chicken time free ranging. Then about an hour ago she suddenly became lethargic and acting off. I checked and she doesn't feel like she has an egg stuck. Her comb/wattles are nice and red...
Thanks all for the replies. I checked her out this afternoon and her vent was fine. Then while the girls were out free ranging I saw this same chicken relax to poop again and she had the bulge again. I'm thinking prolapse. But when I checked her a little while later there was no prolapse...
Good morning.
I have a small flock and I'm fairly new to chicken keeping. My girls are getting close to the time when they'll start laying (one is getting really 'squatty' around me). Yesterday, when my girls were out for their afternoon free ranging I saw one relax her feathers to poop...
I have a small flock (four red sexlinks) and the second in command (she's gotten bigger than my dominate hen and I think she's eyeing the position) always makes a lot a noise-sort of a bwak-bwak-bwak-bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaak-whenever anyone gets near the run. I personally believe that...
Would quarantining still be necessary if I purchase more chickens from my original source? He breeds from a closed flock.
Just trying to increase my chicken information.
Thank you for the information. No, the coop isn't a prefab, store bought one. We repurposed a large machine shipping crate for the coop. The roost is going to have to stay where it is because it can't go higher because of the construction of the nesting boxes. And since they roost at the...
I have four chickens and three nesting boxes. My girls aren't laying yet but have started taking an interest in the nesting boxes. They sleep in them. I've read people say to not let them sleep in the nesting box, but short of sleeping out there with them (no thanks), I can't keep them out of...
Thanks, She seems fine this morning. Ate yesterday afternoon and ran out of the coop this morning for breakfast. Although I can't see why she hungry as that was a big meal! But they are incredible eating machines.
