    chickens constantly eating feathers

They need protein...they need to be on starter and get protein treats, like cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs. They are probably not being fed any scratch either.

    Starter

What i did is when the starter was almost gone and they were almost 15 weeks old, i just started them on Layena Purina. So if you are running out of their starter and they are 15 or 16 weeks old you can get them started on layer cumbles. If not keep them on the starter.

    Layer's Mash Questions - Updated

I like the crumble better than the mash. I was afraid that the powder mash would cause them to get impacted crops. I ran out of the starter layer and went ahead and started feeding my 15 week old girls purina layena.

What does everyone do with the Poo?

I throw mine on the compost pile also. I have a sand run so most of the time there is very little to find. Between them scratching and the rain it kinda just disappears. The coop poop i put on the compost pile...im to lazy to take it straight to the garden.

    One more questions

You have to keep them in their coop and run for awhile before you let them free range. Then they will go into their run and to the coop each evening on their own. They have to know where their home is. There has to be a routine with them...go in each night and put them on their roost, make...

I have been looking for a flock block and havent been able to find one. I give them scratch 2 to 5 times a day in their sand run. I put a flake of hay in with them to play in and scratch through. I only have the one pulling feathers and i just might have to get rid of her or something. I...

What is the best way to deal with aggression?

I think things will work out just fine. They are just getting use to each other and trying to establish a pecking order. Later on if there is one that is still pretty nasty you might want to give her to someone who has chickens. I have an 8 x 10 coop and a 8 x 22 sand run with 22 hens. I...

What is the cure for a feather picker?

Thank you, perhaps they are getting to many treats and not enough protein. I will add cottage cheese & scrabbled eggs each day for all of my girls. I sure hope this makes her stop the feather picking, she is such a sweet chicken. Thanks again

My 22 hens are eating tooooooo much.

Sounds the same as me...i just let them eat what they want. They must need it. I throw in a little oyster shell with their scratch. I picked up a couple of free range chickens and they ate and ate and ate when i brought them home. I felt so sorry for them. Quote:

Nicest most mellow rooster you can have?

I have a SLW rooster that is a pretty rough fellow when it comes to the girls. Some bloody heads, combs and getting real close to the eyelids. Is there a rooster that is very mellow and calm. My rooster attacks each hen as it gets down off of the roost!! Any ideas please?
