Feather pecking can be a sign of vitamin deficiency or boredom. When I had turkeys I used to feed them coconuts (they were everywhere where I used to live) so they had something to peck at it also was really good for their feathers especially when they were molting. Some people also hang...
From what I can remember hatching turkeys and hatching chickens are fairly similar only turkeys take 4 weeks to incubate instead of 3. I'm sure there are people here that are much more experienced with turkeys than I am though. Good luck with your hatch.
I've also heard (I haven't tested it myself) that putting vinegar in chickens water will keep the smell at a minimum. But as already stated keeping the brooder clean with fresh bedding would be the best option.
Over here we have salmon, blue salmon, blue laced, buff, black, white, burgundy, ermine, cuckoo and birchen do you guys have all these colors? or any that we don't have?. There are some very dedicated breeders here putting a lot of time and effort into perfecting the existing colors, creating...
I have two faverolles pullets that are inseparable so when one sits in my lap the other follows and then the other seven chickens think that they are getting treats so they hang around my feet and then the dogs get jealous because the chickens are getting all the attention so of course I end up...
Just yesterday my three dogs found a fox stalking my chickens at 4pm so still broad daylight. While two chased it away the third sat with the chickens and stayed with them for the rest of the afternoon. I am so happy to have such excellent chicken guards.
I never really know what to say when someone asks whether or not I'm religious. I wasn't raised to believe in any set religion but I was raised to be open minded. I still don't follow any organized religion but I do believe in some sort of higher being or beings. If someone does choose to follow...
It's only the first day of autumn and I already miss summer. We don't get snow here but the ground does tend to freeze at night and the occasional golf ball sized hail stones aren't much fun either. I can't wait for spring to come back.

I did that at that age, too. I spent years listening to second-hand records (Led Zeppelin, Boston, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, etc.) on a second-hand record player. (Everyone was starting to dabble with CD's, so cassettes were on the verge of dying, and records were...
I'm obsessed with anything from AC/DC or Janis Joplin. I'm only 19 so both Janis Joplin and Bon Scott were dead before I was even born but I just can't get enough of them.
Toredano they are coconuts lots and lots and lots of coconuts. We know the local treelopper and living in the tropics means there's a lot of coconut trees around so when about 80 trees had to be denutted we got all the nuts:D The animals love them I have over 100 chooks, ducks and turkeys plus 3...
The problem with measuring the beard is I think poor Cloud got his caught in a fence or something because he had one when I got him and now he doesn't. He is full grown he wieghs about 9kg (sorry don't know how much that is in pounds) yet I can still pick him up and give him a hug (with...
Is it just me or do you hear all too often about criminals trying to sue the people that they're stealing from? One of the local store got broken into and the guy tried to sue the shop owner for cutting himself on the window he broke, there sure are some crazy people out there.
OK back to...
Imagine if all that money went to something useful like helping the thousands of starving and homeless people throughout the world rather than arguing about a wall.
I have some red chicks like that which I think are sussex x rhode island red. Is it also possible that the black and yellow one could be an australorp it looks a lot like my Mums little chicks.
I know most people might find it gross or unhygenic or whatever but I go barefoot just about everywhere in or out of the chicken coops. Feet are easy to clean, cost nothing and the dogs can't steal them off the doorstep. If I get a cut on my foot then I'll put some shoes on but if not then it's...
