    Broody or new layer?

I have one girl who was wandering with her sisters earlier and now sitting in a nest box. How long does it take to lay an egg? These are 17 or 18 week old sexlinks. She's been in it about 20 mins now, preening the shavings and placing them around her. She's laying on the tester egg and moving it...

    Ahhhh! First eggs! Questions!

So exciting!!! One of our 18 weekers laid an egg yesterday and today and then just a few mins ago I found the soft membrane of two more side by side under one of the hens while on the roost. I'm assuming that's another one that's getting ready to lay and is it normal for that to happen while on...

    Heat in the winter?

I live in Maine and winters can get cooooold. I'm getting a bunch of crap from some friends saying we are mean to not provide heat lamps throughout the winter for our chickens... All the research I've done says it's not needed for adult chickens. What's the real truth?

What do YOU feed your chickens?

On a side note... The girls have a separate container for their grit and another for their oyster shells when they get to that age.

What do YOU feed your chickens?

I am looking for ideas on what to feed our chickens. We can't spend an exuberant amount of money on feed... They will be in a coop at night and run during the day... Free ranged when we are home. I don't mind feeding them store bought feed... However if it's not organic I am noting a lot of...

    Light in the coop?

An update here... We weaned them off the light over the course of several days and now they are great :) they've even doubled in size. It's cute to see them out themselves to bed. They were fine even in the 25 degree nights.

    Blood on the roost??

I am not sure what is going on. I will look at them again when I get home. I DID notice one of the chickens yesterday opening her beak occasionally then closing it again. She did this every few seconds.....

    Blood on the roost??

Two days ago I noticed blood smeared on the roost (we use the 4" side of a 2x4) -- I checked vents and feet and all seemed OK.. unless I missed something? I am VERY new to chicken owning. The girls are about 7 weeks old give or take. They are also acting completely normal.... Ideas?? thoughts??

    Fox!!

It's constructed of plastic pallets with plastic hardware cloth on top. Which may get changed to plastic pallets on top if they are alive when I get home .....

    Fox!!

It's not fully secure :( we have not had chance to put wire in bottom of it yet. Ugh. I have an awful feeling.

    Fox!!

My 6 week babies are out in the run during the day and locked in the coop at night. We saw a fox early this morning when still dark ... Are they night time predators??? I didn't think before leaving and let the coop door open for the day ..... Crap :(

    Poop deck??

I need some poop deck ideas that are simple. It wasn't planned well. We have a roost that crosses the center of the coop (one access door for cleaning). I can't do fancy. Just not enough room. I'm thinking we need to move the roosts. Any advice is appreciate.

    Light in the coop?

Well.. I replaced the flood light with a small night light and put in a card board huddle box. They were loudly chirping! Stressing me out! It's going to dip to 28 tonight. I'm secretly not going to be able to sleep .... Hope I don't wake up to frozen chicken.

    Feeding too much?

Thank you for that reply! Mine are 6 weeks. Still feed them at night? And do you lock the feed up somewhere and give in morning?
