    Brooder design

I am after suggestions for the design of a large brooder. I try to raise a batch or 2 of hyline/shaver chicks (commercial breed here in NZ) a year - 100 each time that come from a hatchery. I keep a few for myself and sell the rest to a growing list of customers. I also hatch some heritage...

    Baby cows grass fed

Hi there - I see your post is a few months old so hopefully your calves are doing well. I live in New Zealand where cattle are mostly grass fed. This is not an issue and you will have happy healthy animals. I rear calves on milk, twice a day for about 4-6 weeks then once a day until 8 weeks...

It's time for me to admit I have a problem...

Love it! We had a sweet wee guy turn up in June, (live rural and suspect he was dumped didn't just claim the neighbours cat!), he is such a character and always doing ridiculous things too. Being a black cat he is a bit hard to get good photos of

When do you turn the incubator off??

No - I did set them all at once but they were collected over a couple of days. I put in 150 eggs and thought it would take too long to candle them all (be out of the incubator too long) so just thought I would see what happened. I wouldn't know where to start with calibrating the incubator...

When do you turn the incubator off??

I have incubated quite a few batches of eggs now but always struggle with when to call it done and turn off the incubator. Interested to know other perspectives on this and what others do. I have had chicks hatching for 3 days now and yes I am one of those people that open the incubator and...

    Chicken Behaviors

Hi, how is your rooster settling in now? I have same problem, introduced a new rooster to the flock and he doesnt stand up for himself with the hens and spends all day on the perch hiding from them. I have 1 other rooster, a real gentle giant who doesnt bother him at all and more than enough...

    Potato growing question?

The previous owners of our property planted potatoes, that was 3 years ago, I havent planted any since and we only have to buy them for a few months in the middle of winter. I just dig up enough for what I need and make sure to leave the rest well covered. Totally agree on encouraging people...

Mixed Incubation - geese chickens etc

Hi, I am interested to hear experiences incubating different birds together. I have a large old-school incubator that can take 2000 eggs. I am planning for spring and was thinking of putting in mixed eggs. Turkey, geese, chickens - not 2000 eggs but just a good mix of whatever I can get. Any...

Gonna be a chicken mamma soon; but . ..

I personally wouldn't have them inside but can see this would be an individual thing based on what you are prepared to put up with noise and smell wise. I would go with 10 to start wait 6 months and get more, this will help with consistent supply of eggs otherwise you are likely to end up with...

    Barred Rock?

BR crossed with something. I have some similar that came from a flock with a BR roo. You can see some BR feathers in there.

Question for transitioning chicks to outdoor flock

When I need my teenagers to move I make sure the pen the are used to is shut up and just on dark when the older ones are in their spots force the teenagers in with the older ones. I do have to do this for a few nights before they figure out that is where they need to be.

    is this chick normal?

It does look like that bit is drying which is good, and if it is moving around that is a good sign. I would leave it to dry and fluffy up and see how it goes 🤞

    is this chick normal?

It looks to me like the membrane, sorry don't remember exactly what it it called, attaching the chick to the yolk may not have dried properly and it has pulled on it. Their insides come out. If this is the case there is not much you can do other than let it sit quietly and wait to see if it...

Tips for intergrating chickens with adults

I haven't had much issue introducing new chicks, I usually have them enclosed near the adults for a few weeks then let them all out together. I do check to make sure everyone goes to bed at night and feed the young ones a bit extra to start to make sure they are getting enough. The young...

Obsessive Chicken Disorder (OCD) help and support thread 😂😅🐔

I don't actually know how many I have! When asked I say around 70. I started with 4, then bought a small incubator and the problem started. I would probably have more but people know me as the chicken lady and buy them off me. I bought a 2000 egg antique incubator, it takes up a lot of room in...

Problems with my HHD 12 Egg Incubator

I battled with a dodgy incubator for a while. I don't know this brand but my suggestion would be to disconnect the alarm if you can and use an independent thermometer and humidity sensor. Try to work out how to stabilize both before putting eggs in. Good luck.

    Making an auto turner

From what I have read on their side is best because it replicates what happens when they are under a hen.

    Making an auto turner

I found an old school multiplo double door incubator for sale and bought it, it still heats up and looks like it will work and if nothing else it looks pretty cool. This thing is huge and hatches over 2000 eggs at once. Starting to wonder what I have done! Hubby is into electronics and is...

Help with inconsistent incubator temperatures 🤒

Hi I know this is an old thread but really interested to know if you have solved this or given up? I have an incubator very similar to this and have had 5 disastrous hatches and still no closer to figuring it out. I get 2 or 3 hatch out of a batch of I am lucky. I am trying to decide whether to...
