    Undersized Chicks at 18 Weeks

I lost another one on October 16. She had a serious crop issue that I was unable to control. Tried probiotics, anti-fungal, crop bra... Out of the original six, I have four. Recently, a friend who is having kidney transplant surgery gave me the two pullets he got last spring. The serious...

Is it time to say goodbye?

Sorry to say she did not. When I put the crop bra on her as loose as I could and still lift it, she just closed her eyes, obviously uncomfortable—like it was pressing on her windpipe. I decided to take it off and let her be in her favorite place—my garden. Her end was quick and, I think...

Is it time to say goodbye?

I put it in her and the lower strap wouldn’t stay closed so I had to safety pen it. She hasn’t figured it out and her crop is so huge it may be more uncomfortable for her. Going back out to check on her now.

Is it time to say goodbye?

I made one just a while ago and will see if it helps. I’m going out to put it on shortly. This is so agonizing.

Is it time to say goodbye?

My free range area is big and diverse. I don’t think it would stay on. I’m integrating these pullets with my 4.5-year olds. It’s a stressful time under the best of circumstances. And maybe this sounds cold, but I just don’t think I want to manage that along with all the other things going on.

Is it time to say goodbye?

This girl started having issues with enlarged crop the last week in September. I withheld food for 24 hours serving only water. I vomited her successfully a few times. By the weekend of Oct. 3rd and 4th she seemed to be ok. I left my chickens in care of a neighbor while on vacation for 6 days...

This is a picture of my girl this morning before any food except a bit they’ve scratched into the ground. At this point she’s had 5 doses of Miconazole. It doesn’t seem to have had any effect.

Would you isolate her from the other hens? I’m in the process of integrating pullets with 4.5 year old hens. That’s stressful. So far I’ve separated her.

Ok. Thanks. The 1/2 inch measurement with the cream: is that as measured with the applicator that comes in the box or straight out of the tube? The volume if measuring with the cream in the applicator is quite a bit more because of the diameter of the applicator.

Great article. Very helpful. The only thing I’d include is how much feed (Volume) you should be giving with each dose of the miconazole cream.

    Possible Sour Crop?

In my way to get the cream. You didn’t mention prescribed amount of actual food on the two feedings. I’d think I would not feed much since she’s still not processing but I wanted to check. She had some regular looking poops overnight but her crop still looks full.

I’m so sorry. I totally missed that link. It’s been upsetting.

    Possible Sour Crop?

I just searched this and found that one woman used the exact same thing and she cut one suppository into six pieces. She dosed 1-2 times a day, hiding it in yogurt. She also said straight into the beak was well-tolerated by her bird. What do you do? And how long do you continue it?

    Possible Sour Crop?

Just went and looked on Walmart website. They have an Equate 3-day treatment combination pack. It looks like a suppository. Would I place that in her vent?

How do you administer the Miconazole? Is it a cream?

    Possible Sour Crop?

Her crop isn't hard as in an impacted crop. It's soft and squishy. She is going on 25 weeks, but for 18 weeks all of my chicks got outdated food. I was told it was current and like an idiot, I didn't double-check the date on the bag. None of the birds I got is laying yet. In fact, they're still...

    Distended Crop No Sour Smell

I have a pullet with a distended crop. It's soft and squishy. It makes gurgling sounds. I've emptied it several times on multiple days, and the liquid ejected doesn't smell sour. I've read the sour smell is pretty strong with sour crop. I've isolated her and am feeding her water with a tiny...

    Possible Sour Crop?

I have a situation that may be sour crop that has a bit of a history. It's a long story but I'll distill it: I purchased chicks from McMurray Hatchery. They were healthy when they got here and seemed to progress normally. As they got older I realized they weren't growing as fast as they should...

    Undersized Chicks at 18 Weeks

Sad to say that little Bella died yesterday. I was able to get my small animal vet to prescribe some antibiotic powder to put in water, but it was too late. Before I even gave it to her she was wheezing pretty badly. Possibly it was a matter of her immune system not being strong because of that...
