I've had my chickens since last June. Everyone has been safe, happy and healthy so far and I've been thoroughly entertained. Recently I've noticed one of the girls is experiencing some feather loss on her back. Today I noticed another one. Egg production has went down. Could they be having a...
Thanks Ridgerunner for all that insight. It can get pretty cold here but now that you mention it I do see the wild birds, or evidence of them all winter. I will have no problem getting to them to feed and water them, my biggest obstacle will be my father in law saying that he's already helped me...
Hi all,
I live in Ontario and it's starting to get colder out. My chickens will need to move from their coop to the barn with the cattle where it's warmer. I was wondering when I should do that as the nights are really starting to cool down. How much cold can they stand?
Mine seem to like the rain and the water when it's lightly raining. Thy will even stick their heads under the watering can or hose. High winds and pounding rain though completely froze them
Love it! It was a bit of work to get chickens allowed on the farm here too but now that they are here I catch my father in law having afternoon coffee with them when I get home from work
When I realized my chickens weren't sleeping on their roosts I quickly got a two by four on the side where they were going so they are more comfortable.
It is shocking how quickly you can get attached to them eh? It's their fun little personalities
Yea, I can see how it could get out of control rather quickly. I love these guys!
I'm hoping I can eventually start charging eggs and selling too a wee bit on the side
The only reason I was considering covering the window was because they aren't using their perches in front of it. I thought...
I'm just starting week 3 tomorrow and I LOVE them beyond words. Everyday there sure is something new to think about. The coop I carefully designed and talked and talked with my husband about? Yea, they hate their perches and preferred the 2x4 between the studs so we made that more comfy for...
I'm glad you got your babies inside! It's amazing the personal fears we can overcome when it comes to our babies, human or otherwise. Hopefully they all are quick learners and they all go in on their own. We can't be there all the time to show them what to do. I think the wind and the suddenness...
This is the first thunderstorm I've experienced since becoming a chicken momma. Everyone is about 3 months old. When the wind started to pick up tonight and the rain really started to hammer down everyone just stood outside the coop. I managed to shoo them inside with food and the help of my...
Thanks, Yes, the nest box problem was fixed about 2 hours after I found them like that I just couldn't resist that picture lol.
Thanks for the egg help! I'll watch them, learn and ask a million questions here!
My plan is to get a few more hens so that works well. How often do the roosters mate? How do I know an egg is fertile? Can I still get eatting eggs with a rooster living with them?
Sorry for all my questions, as I say I'm brand new lol
Legally I can. I live on a 222 acre farm in the original log house with my husband. My mother and father in law live in the main house. I'm not sure how it might go over with her as we are located fairly close to each other. It will all work out I'm sure. I i can't keep him, which I would like...
From the first day I sent with them I was thinking the same thing. Not sure how a cockerel is going to go over as time goes on. I made sure the name can be shortened to Henry if need be lol. They are about two and a half months old right now
Thanks! I will try to get some individual pictures up later. They aren't really interested in staying sill enough for that or far enough way from each other and myself
While waiting almost two months last Sunday I finally got to bring home my chickens! It took that long to build the coop while both my husband and I worked full time jobs. They are settling in well. I love coming home and having them run outside or over to their fence when I get home from work...
