    Adult turkey flipped?

When I found it, It was lying on its back. It's wings were opened as if it had been flapping but was relatively still when I found it. The eyes were open and it was clearly awake and moving its head a little. Another turkey hen was standing over it and taking pot shots, pecking at the head...

    Southern Maine Bourbon Reds?

The Broad Breasted Bronzes were nice to raise. They are docile, friendly, and get along well with the chickens. The smallest is about 30 lbs now at 5-6 months old. I bought them at 2-3 days old for about $5.50 each from a feed store. Straight run resulted in 3 hens and a Tom. We've got them to...

    Adult turkey flipped?

Yes, that's what I was thinking as well. All four were going to be eaten this fall although I was hoping for a few more pounds. Still 30lbs live weight for the first one should be okay, then we'll take the Tom (much bigger) for Thanksgiving in another month. I was just curious if they're all...

    Adult turkey flipped?

I found one of my female turkeys, Broad-breasted Bronze, flipped over and lying on its back. It seemed exhausted, perhaps from trying to right itself? I picked it up and set it back on its feet. It was able to stand and walk, but seems "tired" (although it's only been an hour or so. It doesn't...

    Southern Maine Bourbon Reds?

I'm in Strafford, NH, not far from the border. This year I raised Broad-breasted Bronzes (and many chickens), but planning on Bourbon Reds next year. Will you be selling poults in the spring?

how much money have you spent on your setup?

I spent $790 in total for coop, equipment, and chickens. That does not include food and other consumables like straw/ wood shavings. I have 17 chickens at present (first acquired in April 2009 as chicks). Next year we are planning on raising meat chickens as well as the egg producers, so the...

dumped a bunch of leaves in the run

My flock free ranges through my yard, part of which is forested. The forested areas have thick coverings of leaves on the ground and they spend hours and hours digging through them for bugs. They also like to nestle down in the leaves on hot days to keep cool. It also makes it easy to find them...

Drooping wing? Too heavy or something worse?

Day 5 update: The Welsummer's wing was tucked up in a normal position last night as it ate and stood in its isolation cage, but this morning it is drooping to the cage floor again. I was hoping after last night that I could let it out to range today, but with the wing drooping that low again...

Drooping wing? Too heavy or something worse?

They ordinarily free-range for food all day, so I would think that would make up for any deficiencies in the pellets if there are any. With all the chickens ranging together, it is impossible to keep one set of chickens out of the feeders of the other if the feed is being freely offered all day.

Drooping wing? Too heavy or something worse?

No, I just thought the extra protein might be better for recovery and healing to keep her strength up. I understand from others that after 8 weeks layer crumbles are fine and the extra calcium won't hurt.

Drooping wing? Too heavy or something worse?

Day 2 update. The affected pullet is in isolation. I have switched its feed back to starter/ grower 20% to try to give it a boost. It had been on layer pellets with the rest of the flock since 10 weeks. I caught it shivering this morning despite warm temperatures in the indoor isolation. It has...

Drooping wing? Too heavy or something worse?

I have a welsummer pullet that is just about 3 months old and has been entirely healthy to date. Today, I noticed that one wing is very droopy with the ends of the wing feathers dragging on the ground. It has good energy, is eating and dringking well, and appears otherwise in great shape. When...

does temperature of incubator determine sex of chicken?

No. Otherwise the large commercial facilities would hatch almost all hens instead of sorting them out afdter they hatch and destroying the male chicks...

    calling all bloggers :)

Not exactly a blog, but I write about Birds and Bird Watching here . If anyone would like to write about chickens for their local edition here's the link: http://www.examiner.com/about_examiner/ It pays about $9.50 for every 1000 page views. You can even post stuff you've already published on...

Is this the genetic condition "fray?"

I hatched this chick from a Red Star X WHite Plymouth Rock. It was born undersized and trailing some yellow stringy material which I surgically excised (no bleeding) with advice from this group. I have a tiny incubator and only had two eggs in it, one did not develop at all. If this is a genetic...

    Not a welsummer?

The posted pics are about a week old. I can take some more in the next couple of days and try to get a clear shot of the feather patterns. We have three of these birds in total that are all nearly identical, though one shows just a tad more reddish coloring than the other two around the head and...

    Not a welsummer?

Thanks all. Given that the breeder represented them as Welsummers originally, and with Tailfeathers' corroborating opinion, I'll go with that assumption. They are not intended for show, but rather as providers of uniquely colored eggs (as opposed to the light brown of the other layers we have)...

How to Tell a Fertile vs INfertile Egg (Pictures)

In reading through the thread I saw the question asked a few times about how long you can keep fertile eggs in the refrigerator and still hatch them. I did not see the answer anywhere, so here goes: Once you put the fertile in the refrigerator (long enough to cool it) it is done and cannot be...

    Not a welsummer?

I picked up three of these from a local breeder who told me they were welsummers. I hadn't been looking for welsummers at the time and am fairly new to chicken raising so I wasn't fully aware of breed characteristics... While the plumage looks very much like welsummers (to me), the legs are a...
