Does anyone know of a breeder between Los Lunas and Santa Fe that breeds golden laced wyandottes or golden double laced barnevelders? I have fallen in absolute love with the feather patterns and colors of those breeds and I'd love to get a bird or two from a private breeder with good stock. I...

    Need help integrating a bird

CTKen, Lazy Gardener: Thank you for the necessary and missing information. Those were helpful. The run is chain link fencing at 6' high x 6' wide x 10' long. 60 square feet in the run floor for four birds, plus 3 roosting bars in the run. They dust bathe under the coop and under another roost...

    Need help integrating a bird

Actually, it isn't too small, it's rated to hold 6 large birds. My three older birds are nearly full grown and take up half the space in that coop. No worries, though. As I'd stated in the first post, I only have four birds now. But thanks for opining on the topic of coop size. Edited by Staff

    Need help integrating a bird

This is my first year raising chickens and my learning curve has ramped up significantly! I made the mistake of chicken math, though... I got my first four birds on the same day, as day old chicks, and they grew in the brooder together. When they were old enough I moved them outside to the...

    Barred Rock Pullet or Cockerel?

I'm the OP of the thread, and my barred rock in the first photos started crowing at about 14 weeks old, two weeks after I'd posted this thread. He turned out to a be a royal jerk of a bird, too! He'd bite me every chance he got, and was relentlessly pulling feathers from my three other girls. We...

    New Mexico

I have a question for my fellow New Mexican BYC'ers, particularly around Albuquerque/Rio Rancho as I'm looking for input from people in a similar environment as me. I'm very new to raising chickens and so far it's going well. Four of my birds are 12 weeks old now, and the baby is 7 weeks old...

    How long?

I hope no one minds me starting my own thread on this topic, I didn't want to high-jack someone else's thread to ask my questions. I have 4 birds (3 pullets & 1 cockerel) that are 12 weeks old. They have been in their outdoor coop/run area for about a month and a half now. I also have a 5 week...

    Barred Rock Pullet or Cockerel?

At what age do cockerels start crowing? I haven't heard anything more than the chick "peep" out of the barred rock. At 12 weeks old I hope I won't need to wait too much longer to get that confirmation.

    Barred Rock Pullet or Cockerel?

Thank you! I was thinking cockerel as well but I wanted confirmation. Now to figure out what to do with him, as I cannot keep roosters in my neighborhood.

    Barred Rock Pullet or Cockerel?

Thank you for replying, Liv. I was hoping to get a few comments on these two birds, especially the barred rock. Can anyone else offer their thoughts/opinions, please?

    Barred Rock Pullet or Cockerel?

While I'm at it, can anyone tell me if my EE is a pullet or cockerel? S/he is also 12 weeks old.

    Barred Rock Pullet or Cockerel?

I already know this bird is a barred rock, and that it is 12 weeks old. Question is, will it be a hen or rooster?

Is it necessary to close the coop at night?

Thank you for your replies and input. As a new BYC'er I appreciate all the input I can get! So here's my setup: the coop is inside the run, not attached to it (photo below). The dimensions are 10x6x6. The bottom of the fencing run is sitting on chicken wire buried about an inch or so down, and...

Is it necessary to close the coop at night?

Hello, I'll start this by saying that I live in the desert near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Predators here are primarily coyotes, hawks, and owls, raccoons or foxes aren't an issue. I am also brand new to raising chickens. Now, I have 5 birds--4 pullets and 1 cockerel--in a 10x6 dog run/fence, and...

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 5

Yes, that one has me a bit worried as well. I already have a cockerel Barred Rock and our city doesn't allow roosters in city limits. The one you pointed out is also a bit larger than the other EE, and they're the same age. My first foray into raising chickens is starting out rocky (no pun...
