Topic of the Week - Feeding Chickens - What to feed and when?

MEDICATED OR NON-MEDICATED: I personally don't use medicated feed. I am feeding a flock of 46 and have never seen any symptoms indicating the need for a medicated feed. WHEN TO SWITCH: I keep everyone on NEW COUNTRY ORGANICS NON-SOY 22%STARTER. I keep Oyster Shell and Grit available at all...

Topic of the Week - Deworming chickens

So I am going to deworming my flock of 40 tomorrow. Is it better to deworm them on an empty stomach (in the morning prior to eating) or in the evening after they have eaten all day long?

    Suddenly refusing fermented food

There is a HUGE benefit to fermenting feed other that them not spilling it. The reason the feed bill drops when owners begin correct fermentation is when fermentation is done correctly, we as humans, are "partially digesting" the feed for them. Chickens lack the necessary enzymes in their gut...

    Repurposed, functional, and BEAUTIFUL!

Hello all! I thought I would share some pics of our finished chicken coop! It measures 20' X 12' and the frame is made from a ShelterLogic frame our neighbor gave us that was no longer wanted. Additional framing was done with pressure treated lumber. The base is railroad ties (also given to...

I have 16 BPR hens and I love them!! I have hand raised this gagle of hens since they were 2 days old and from that day I just loved their temperament!! I ordered mine from Cackle Hatchery and they came out of their shipping box like little ball of fluff rockets LOL! My son and one of the...

    Corn free feed

I feed New Country Organics as well and I LOVE it!!! It has such a good smell when you open that bag! And I also like the fact that the protein content is higher than Scratch and Peck.... I think my chickens, especially my young ones, need that extra protein :) I also love the fact that you...

New turkey owner. Freaking out about blackhead.

You can keep chickens and turkeys together but you need to deworm your turkeys 2-3 times a year for coccidia which can turn into liver flukes. Sageguard for goats will kill the coccidia and keep it from prgressing to the liver... same concept as heartworm medication for dogs.

Review by '' on item 'Side mounted, Spring-loaded Chicken/Small Animal Water Drinker - 10 Pack'

I got these after reading some reviews on Amazon! I initially bought the vertical ones which leak like CRAZY even with silicone applied around them! My 7 week old hens were accustomed to the vertical nipples so I introduced the horizontal nipples on a cooler day and took away the vertical...

Had to share a pic of my pretty 3 week old Poult!

I got him from a lady who raises some rare colors of Turkeys. I believe he would be considered a Tiger Narragansett. My other one i got is a very pretty Calico... pretty sure she is a hen :) They seem to really love laying in my lap and getting warm LOL!

    Does anyone Vaccinate their poults?

A little background here LOL! The boyfriend and I went to TSC... someone dropped off 2 chickens... long story short one had to be culled immediately the other, after 4 days of intensive treatment (tube feeding and subcu fluids) she started showing classic signs of Mareks Dz. Now all my...

    Sour Crop CURED with Monistat

She pooped approximately 30 minutes after TF'ing my little cocktail! YAY! I tried to get a picture of it but I couldn't. It smelled awful and was a light green in color and with some small chunks of formed chicken poop... I'm assuming the green is bile. Approximately an hour and a half...
