Thank you all for your replies. After doing a little research on the term pithing, I see that the bird shouldn't be killed first, which would cause the brain to be scrambled and the bird is alive during this.

I want my turkeys to...
Okay so we are butchering our turkeys this weekend for Thanksgiving. We have butchered chickens before and have scalded them, however in a book we have about turkeys they talk about debraining. My boyfriend thinks that this is probably a better way because of the size of the birds (getting a...

So I had my babies hatch on the 9 & 10! Its been SO cool seeing them. I had 10 eggs and 8 of them hatched (one died immediately). You may have read my post about my trash can baby. Or my blog about my new babies.
But now I have 7 babies and 2 very protective mothers, who get...
mmaddie's mom :
So are you going to put Oscar in with the other moms and babies?!?
Ummmm.... well now I'm having a problem with that. I don't want anything to happen to him anymore! I know I should probably decide really soon... what do you guys think?
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I get home and Oscar is walking around on his own strong legs! I'm so proud of him! He is a strong healthy loud little guy! Oscar is going to make it!
As I see it that trash can was pretty warm, so that's how if was able to. So as of this morning before work if was doing real well and starting to walk on his feet! I'm impressed with his progress! I'll have to post pictures of little Oscar.
Now the other two eggs smell rotten or bad at least. Should I take them out and officially throw them away or keep them until tomorrow? Now I'm gun shy about doing anything with them.
As for Oscar, he seems okay, definitely better then when I first found him, but he's just not walking. I...
How in the world do you sex a silkie? From my search there is only one way and thats waiting until they crow or lay an egg. Which kind of sucks. But I was wondering if they have color on their face (blue) then its a boy? My male silkie has blue on his face, and some of my 3month olds have...
I did candle, and I have a hard time making anything out when I do candle though. I see a big glob. But it did look the shape of a chick so I think there ARE chicks in there.... however are they alive I have no idea. I can't hear pipping but I tried listening to the other eggs right before...
Well the trashcan baby is doing real good. A lot more energy then when I found him, so thats a good sign. I decided to name him Oscar after Oscar the grouch that lived in a trash can on Sesame Street.
They are both being great motherly hens. I'm so impressed with the shared responsibility and the babies follow both of them around. Its SO cute to watch! They share the babies.
Yes I should had candled them and definitely will next time. The little guy doesn't have enough strength in his legs right now to walk right. I'm hoping by the end of the day he'll be able to walk and I'll tuck him in with mama(s) tonight when they are sleeping. My question though is how did...
So I had 10 eggs that my hen was laying on, all were collected under her within 2 days. I marked them and pulled out all the new eggs the other hens would lay on top of her, I know I should had moved her nest but I honestly wasn't sure how okay with that she would be. She had been an off again...
