    The Great Papyrus' Chat Thread

WHAT?!?! I don't eat my chickens! Actually, I was thinking about having two coops. One for pet chickens, and one for meat chickens. We name our pets, and, well . . . don't name the others.;)

    The Great Papyrus' Chat Thread

AAAAAH! That's a hard one . . . I'm thinking . . . cookie dough right now. In an hour my mind will have changed to cookies. :p

    How old to free range?

Truth. . . . The pecking order always seems to get in the way of things, doesn't it? ;) For some weird reason, my very young chicks and my older chickens got along fine after I formerly introduced them. :love So I don't usually think about that sort of problem,

What are some of your favorite names for chickens?

I like to go by themes. My chickens are named after math terms . . . Acute, Obtuse, Trapezoid, Rhombus, Divisor, and Quotient. The weird thing is, I really, really don't like math . . . :p I also named some after money terms. Dollar, Quarter, Dime, Nickle, and Penny. :D

    How old to free range?

The only real concern (in my opinion) is if the younger chicks would get bullied by the older chickens. As far as getting lost is concerned, I wouldn't worry. :D Chickens who 'wander off' are usually just taken by predators. If your older chickens don't get lost, there's an even smaller chance...

    What made you get chickens?

Oh boy, my reason is a very unique one. My friends live on a farm, and have a ton of chickens. We didn't take much notice, and I'm not sure what got into their heads  . . . but they thought it would be nice to get me a couple chicks for my birthday! :bun I LOVED :love them, and...

Chick hatched with slight cross beak, suggestions as to how to help correct?

Could you post some pictures? It might be a deformity in which the lower part of the beak is longer than the top one. If it is, use a dog-nail clipper to trim the light part of the bottom beak. The light colored part is like our nails, and are not sensitive to pain. Be careful not to cut the...

my ducks dislike me how do i tame them?

Ask yourself, what would Jesus do? God wins our hearts with love. He blesses us, even when we don't deserve it. I try the same with my chickens. :D good luck!

    swimming?

Lol. :D Storey's guide to raising chickens says they should get used to a nice, warm bubble bath eventually. My hens swim, but only for a few moments . . . Then they freak out! :barnieI think they're getting used to it though. My Rhode island red is doing a lot better than the Buff Orpington...

    Yogourt ?!?!

Oh dear, we buy corn on the cob for our chickens all the time!!!! I keep thinking how much I would like to eat that corn myself until I see them eat it. Then it's all worth the sacrifice :D . . . Although I am still rather partial to corn on the cob . . . :p

    swimming?

I would disagree. Chickens can swim! :) Or rather, float happily along. :D Just like ducks, minus the paddling ability. I've seen it with my own chickens. It's the getting-them-to-like it that's difficult . . . :he . . . ;) I think it's great for really hot days when they need to cool down.

    injured chick emergency!

I've had the exact same situation with one of my chicks! It was a very young chick, and the older chicken blinded it. I did the best I could. I put it in a small, cardboard box with pine chips on the bottom. I took it inside and found a house lamp. I used that instead of a normal chicken lamp...

Don't know what breed or gender you have? Click here!

Thanks guys! Definitely a cockerel! Do you know what breed? I'm taking care of them for our neighbor, but neither of us know what breed . . .

I gave you those pictures because they were less blurry :) They've grown a bit since then. Here, try these.

Urgent. Tiny chick cold still alive. Mum doesn't want it.

Do you have a light to put it under??? Even just a lamp? You could use your body heat. That's all I can think of! Hope it lives!

    Clipping feathers

Not at all! We once lived in the same situation! They once all flew over the fence and were in the neighbor's driveway near a busy road! We clipped them for their own safety, and it wouldn't be mean for you to do the same.

    Two questions

Well, it would certainly help to make home made electrolytes! You can find recipes online. Here is a link http://justfowlingaround.weebly.com/chicken-blog/1

    Clipping feathers

True, I think the tree would help. Now, I thought about your question concerning flight feathers helping to escape raptors. If you think about how far and high chickens can fly, they could probably flutter to safety. It would probably on the limb of a tree, or under a shelter (this is why it's a...
