I made my husband do just this! I adopted this rooster (about a yr ago) & he was gentle at first, then recently treaded the heck out of one of my hens to the point that the other ones are/were pecking her (because of the pink showing/about to quarantine her). Now I have a decapitated rooster &...
I will get a newer Phone (hand held computer) & down load photos later. Just got two more new hens to add to my flock, a total of 10 (1 Rooster {aka Cogburn}). EggsXited!
So..I haven't signed in in a while. I got a trophy for 2yrs as a member, I will try to post more in the future. Sad to report that my 1st flock were killed by some bad neighbors dogs (I had extended the run & they jumped the compost pile/fence). Tradegy! I was very sad (& a little crazy:mad:)...
Yeah, it sucked. Problem is, the hood I drive thru daily...they do not care. I've seen them chicks before. Just gonna take em next time. They didn't seem to care..& I am working on chicken vallah...;)
Yeah I'm still a newbie....but please keep your chicks in check. I was on my way to work this morning (I live in Austin). Saw a dead/dying Bantam in the road. Past by, looked in the rearview...saw a truck pass saw a chicken try to get to the curb. Pulled a U-Turn put on my hazards & picked up...
In the morning a suet basket with kale, some grapes or cherry tomatoes & more kale (like a sandwich). Peaches, watermelon (all melons) figs (1st tome today-big hit). All cold, here in TX in the afternoon it's frozen, mango & strawberries, broccoli&cauliflower (frozen bags are the best)...
Could one (or more) of the fine BYC peoples direct me to a chart that shows the breed & eggs produced from the breeds mentioned? I think I have 5 out 6 laying & I don't know whose eggs are whoms. K
I know where I am going to put my ashes from the BBQ tonight. All this time I used to bag it & throw it away in the trash. Love having chickens! Thanks ya'll. K
I started with pine shavings, couldn't decide & got both. Been using the rice hulls for about two months. I still have pine shavings in my compost from Feb (new to composting too).
I use rice hulls for the coop. 10cf for 12$ at my local feed store. It scoops better when cleaning & breaks down in my compost quicker than pine shavings. Just my two cents. K
Howdy! Yeah looks like I was a luker too. I have a flock of 6 (six) 2 barred rocks, 2 buff orpingtons & 2 speckled sussex. Got them at Buck Moore on 02/05/16, they were two days old. I live North Central (I-35/Rundberg) which community garden?
Thanks Drumstick Diva! I will look up my state. I lurked here for about 6 months (before chickens) & have gained alot of knowledge. I had a narrow a/c drip pan that I filled w/water and frozen 1ltr bottles. They didn't seem to like it (took up too much space?). I am going to switch it w/a...
My six love cold/frozen watermelon, grapes, tomatoes, melons. One or more of the fine BYC peoples mentioned 'chick gatorade' (there is a recipe) & another makes chick cickles (frozen treats). Mine are rather spoiled. Out of my 6 I think I have three that just started laying. So happy I got 3...
Hi ya'll, my name is Kim I live in Austin & got my chicks on 02/05/16. So cute 2day old chicks. Now my flock of 6 (2 Barred Rocks, 2 Buff Orpingtons & 2 Speckled Sussexs) is pretty spoiled! Any tips advice on keeping the ladies cool (enough) in 100+ temps would be appreciated. I found BYC from...
I' new too. I tried to do chick cakes (oats or sunflower) to grow before second leaves. In TX I burnt them. I just sprout sunflower seeds now. I soak them in a colander/strainer for 12-24hrs covered w/paper towel. Then rinse put back in the bowl & cover w/papertowel. Rinse every 12hrs or so 2-3...
