There is a large triangle shaped opening... the coop is square, so the room in between the top of it and the pointed roof of the shed is all open... there is just chicken wire to keep predators out. We put a board over it when it gets really cold because it is so open.

Thank you for all the replies! Great advice that I will use for sure! Our chickens are not that old... two are 7 months and two are 6 months... they are all laying though. It gets down to zero degrees here, but right now it is 50 and night is 30.
