    silkie sexing

Five and a half months old (21-22 weeks) white silkie bantam from MyPetChicken. No crowing, but noisy clucking and will do the crouch/squat thing that my other hens do for roosters. However, she/he is best buddies with my rooster and they never go anywhere without each other.

    silkie sexing

17 week old (almost 18) white silkie. Very loud but no crowing. Doesn't strut or walk with head held high like a rooster, comb is almost nonexistent but is light purple and has a tiny but barely raised bump. Likes to cuddle with the rooster and the other pullets. He is a messy eater when I give...

    silkie sexing

This silkie is 11 weeks old in these photos, and she/he is 14 weeks old today. There hasn't been any real change. These photos are from today (this silkie is not fond of posing for the camera) The only slight difference is that the place where the comb would be (it's...

    silkie sexing

The blue earlobe color as nothing to do with whether or not the birds are "blue." Silkies regardless of feather color/phenotype have this blue earlobe. Blue silkies are a dark grey color, they're not actually blue but they are a cool tone deeper grey. Because the blue phenotype does not breed...

    silkie sexing

I have a 11 week old Silkie from MPC. Sexed female but I'm well aware I've got the same chance of her being a cockerel if I had ordered straight run chicks. She's small (lol, obviously) and a little shy compared to the rest of the chicks that she has grown up with who are her age, and she gets...

PLEASE help. 7 wk old chick twisting and stretching neck

She hasn't done the head twisting thing this morning and after work I will check on her again but still worried about Marek's, a respiratory problem, or gape worm. She's not gasping or opening her mouth like she's yawning but she was moving and stretching her neck out quite a lot and moving her...

PLEASE help. 7 wk old chick twisting and stretching neck

My seven week old salmon Faverolle mix is acting lethargic, is stretching her neck and twisting it in circular motions, has a little croak/deep sounding noise after peeping. Worried she might have Marek's. no balance problems but her wings are lowered a little. She was ordered from MPC as a...

ISO Colorful Egg Laying Hens/Pullets In RI/MA/CT area

Looking for any laying hens/pullets that would give me a nice mix of browns, blues/greens, whites, creams, and pale browns. Wanting to get about 15-20. Also would love to get some silkie pullets/hens to hatch some eggs with. Live in South Coast (RI/MA area) and I am willing to drive a bit (1-1.5...

Not sure my pullets are pullets...

What do you mean by failure to thrive? Did both die or get sick easily? I'm really hoping mine doesn't have any health issues if that's what you mean. Definitely contacting the hatchery about this bird because this isn't a salmon Faverolle and I'd like them to tell me what it could be, then. Did...

Not sure my pullets are pullets...

Went snooping around the Faverolle thread and this looks EXACTLY like sammi: members said she was a poorly colored hatchery faverolle but the owner said she didn't know which hatchery she's from because she got her at a feed store.

Not sure my pullets are pullets...

I just looked at the favacaunas on MPC.com. They used to offer a wheaten fava but that's been discontinued, and although those look similar to what Sammi looked like as a little chick, she's feathering out darker than the female wheatens do. The only other fava they have is a blue, and I'm...

Not sure my pullets are pullets...

Thank you all for the responses so far. Here's a few more pictures of Sammi (salmon faverolle) but it's been hard to get good photos of her because she's so squirmy. She does have the five toes and when she was little she looked a lot like a salmon Faverolle chick.

Not sure my pullets are pullets...

These chicks were purchased as pullets from MyPetChicken.com and were born on Sept 19th. They turned five weeks old yesterday. Have suspected that a few are cockerels, but they've changed over the past two weeks and I'm no longer sure. I have: one partridge rock, one white silkie, one Super...

Roosters banned and chickens restricted because of RATS in my town

I was also thinking maybe the way to get rid of the rats was to get more chickens in Evanston to attract them to properties, then set up a bunch of traps during the night, without the use of poison for obvious reasons, but then trap and kill them around the backyards where chickens are kept.

Roosters banned and chickens restricted because of RATS in my town

I could do it discreetly, yeah. We have a farm on the eat coast and I'm not unfamiliar with chicken slaughter but we've learned to love these babies as a family and have spent so many hours bonding with them. They're the sweetest things. I guess I'm just trying to come up with a way to keep them...
