Right, but if done enough generations back and the cross breeds true, then it’s a “real” breed, right? I just can’t seem to find any information on them (which might be saying that they are really just a cute cross, even if done over several generations).
I am getting some Chiquita hatching eggs from a friend tomorrow. I don’t really know anything about that “breed” but I never turn down anything free and I was going to fire up the incubator anyway. :D Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with these chickens? Are they a “real” breed or...
Awww! :love I have a sweet little Pullet that I think would very much like to be a house chicken. (My husband and Yorkies say no, unfortunately.) She comes running to me for cuddles instead of hoping for food like the other greedy chickens do (okay, I love my greedy ones too and think they are...
Lots of ours have names too. Usually not until we know what sex they are, because things with names are harder to butcher. And even the males that we keep don't necessarily get named right away until they prove themselves. Case in point: my Ameraucana cockerel (unnamed) won't be sticking around...
Anyone who thinks that backyard eggs are "cheap" and/or that keeping poultry is "no work" is welcome to take a look at my feed bill and join me on my daily chores routine, then come back on the weekend for the extra work like building Mama pens, adding new roosts, fixing nesting boxes, building...
A good rooster is a joy to watch, the way he tidbits for the girls and guides them to best spots. We have portable coops and sometimes the hens get confused after we've moved a coop and one of our Orpingtons always sticks with the stragglers until we "help him" get his hens to bed. Another one...
At first, I was going to say that the difference between a pet and livestock is that pets get vet care and livestock don't, but then again my sheep do get vet care when they are sick and it's beyond my ability to fix. However, a $300+ sheep is a LOT more valuable than even my most expensive...
I'm in Geneva, OH, and LOVE my ducky darlings. If you really can't find a home for them and are willing to get them up here, I'll give them a good home.
Orpington-cross chicks ages just hatched yesterday through 1 week old, $5 each straight run only. Also, a few Olive Egger chicks (Isbar rooster over Black Copper Maran hen), $8 each straight-run only.
More Orpington cross chicks, blue-green Eggers (Isbar rooster over Ameraucana hen) $8 each...

That's exactly what I was thinking. Get a third hen and the bully won't be able to concentrate on picking on any one individual hen. That and the integration process already mentioned earlier in this thread.
I have a couple of those waterers and I dislike them a lot. They don't work unless perfectly absolutely level and like you said, they quit working before they actually empty.
We like the Farm-Tuff ones from Tractor Supply better. They are still kind of a pain to fill and my gloves always get...
