discolored comb/wattle/face, lethargic, no feathers on belly

We tucked three 3-day old chicks under her last night. This morning they are still alive (cold here), in a different nesting box than we had her in, and she is being very protective. The other hens don't seem to have noticed yet. Hoping this works out! So glad for the advice of experienced...

discolored comb/wattle/face, lethargic, no feathers on belly

Is it contagious?? lol I know it isn't really, but right now I've got a couple other birds hanging out in the coop when they should be out with the others enjoying their freedom from the pen. Gah... I feel so silly! I've been so worried about illness, the rest getting infected, are my...

discolored comb/wattle/face, lethargic, no feathers on belly

This photo shows how she is fluffing up her feathers. This photo shows how pale her face is. Her comb and wattle are usually much more red. Her face, which looks "off". This is how she keeps her tail feather- up like a turkey or peacock.

discolored comb/wattle/face, lethargic, no feathers on belly

    1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Australorp, about 14 months, is losing weight bc she sits in the coop all day. When I do push her out she goes straight to the water. I've not seen her eat feed in over a week, but she is...

    retired layers as meat birds

How gross are they to eat? I've processed many dozens of birds raised for their meat, but not old layers who are no longer producing well. Are they edible? Is it worth the work? I have six who no longer serve a purpose but are healthy and active. Thanks for any advice you have.

    Maynard, Mass Bylaws anyone?

Snowhorse- You seem to have a good handle on the local rules. Rumor has it that if I add another type of farm animal to my family we get a big reduction in our property taxes. (We only have chickens at the moment. ) I'm thinking this might be a good way to convince my spouse to get the...

chickens wont return to coop at night

Is it possible a trap door could be too steep? My 11 girls are about 10 weeks and I've not yet seen one go in the trapdoor. I chase them around like a lunatic and try to teach them to walk up it but not one goes in willingly. They fly out just fine, not in. I think I provide good...

    Pecking One Another

Thank you! I was moving them between a small kiddie pool (about 3' across) and a rubbermaid bin (3' long X 18" wide). The bin is the smaller of the two, but they can't jump out because the sides are higher. I move them into one while I wash out and clean the other. I am only using newspaper...

    Pecking One Another

I am a complete newbie, so I'll apologize if this is obvious. I did take a chicken class and thought I did my homework. My chicks are 1 week 3 days old. I came home today to find two with bloody backends from being pecked. I immediately separated them. What do I do? Are they too crowded...

    Maynard, Mass Bylaws anyone?

Hello- I am in Sudbury and recently checked with the town to make sure I wasn't building a coop in vain. She said she'd come by once a year and inspect in the fall. No rules other than don't upset the neighbors. It seemed very laid back to me. I'm in the process now of coop...

    Aluminum shed as Coop?

I am a newbie and trying to figure out if I can convert an aluminum shed into a coop. I live in Mass. so warmth is a factor. Every search I do leads me to automatic door openers and such. Any btdt or leads on information would be appreciated. Thanks.
